Washington is pretty baffling. I haven’t even seen the film so I’m not calling it a bad thing, but Washington was in a movie that not only tanked at the box office, but got mixed reviews. It only has 2000 ratings on IMDb right now. If only the Academy could’ve recognized the lead performance in a Tony Gilroy film a few years earlier... I have a theory that Academy has cancelled Franco's nom in the last minute, they didn't prepare the right candidate to take franco's place so they randomly picked the Sag Nominee this year Honestly that wouldn’t surprise me. There was only one day left of voting when the LA times article came out so I really doubt it could’ve impacted things that much for Franco. But wanting to get rid of him for fear of bad publicity? I can see it.

Not saying that’s what happened, but if that were to happen, I wouldn’t be surprised.

I had been thinking about McDonagh missing but I was predicting Luca. With Nolan and Del Toro being the big directory movies and Peele and Gerwig being both passion and diversity pics that sort of left him as the middle of the pack one that gets snubbed from time to time.

Just now realized that the Academy never rewarded a sequel for Cinematography. Oh my Deakins

It only has 2000 ratings on IMDb right now. If only the Academy could’ve recognized the lead performance in a Dan Gilroy film a few years earlier... I also haven't seen that movie yet either. But I did apparently hear how Washington had the best performance from it, despite box office and reviews. So there's that... I also found Franco's snub a bit surprising as well, but I also suspected that the controversy may have something to do with it.

Loving some of the reactions in this thread so far. Lol. Now my thoughts: The love for films like Three Billboards, The Shape of Water, and Dunkirk are all a nice surprise! Even the two films that I've never thought would get so many nominations also received the same amount of love from the Academy too, Get Out and Darkest Hour! Let alone for BP... That's impressive. The Phantom Thread and Lady Bird ... I guess I would have to get around to see at some point too. Some nice nods for Blade Runner 2049 and Mudbound. As well as for Margot Robbie, Allison Janney, Octavia Spencer, Willem Dafoe, and even Christopher Plummer. I thought both The Big Sick and The Florida Project could've gotten something a bit more with their nods. The Franco snub was a bit shocking. I guess the allegations finally caught up with the Academy for this to happen... The same goes for the McDonaugh snub in Best Director. The Foreign Language section was a bit predictable, and I found it too bad how First They Killed My Father had to miss out. Same goes for both Animated Feature (Boss Baby, lol!) and Original Song list. I think Best Makeup and Hairstyling may be up in the air. Now a bit excited for this new outcome!

Shame that James Franco didn't make it, but after seeing the film I thought it would be difficult to get a nomination in the first place, it's more like a fun movie, it doesn't have pedigree or whatever the voters look for.
They can nominate Spencer all they want to, it doesn't matter, she has charm for days, her delivery in the film is incredible.
Why there's no huge reaction about McDonagh snub ? double standard right here.
Washington again.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I'm curious, don't know if anybody brought it up already but is this the first time that the big winners of Berlin, Cannes and Venice are nominated ? This is certainly unique, I think I would've noticed in the past.
Apart from the unexpected love for Phantom Thread, I found the nominations very safe and pleasing, more than any other time in the past I think the voters filled the ballots with a checklist by side, there are no statements here, just quotas as if we were at the chambder of deputies. A real shame.
