When the composers did a better job than the filmmakers. I always think that these are better than the movie itself. Especially 'Moneyball' by Mychael Danna, a criminal snub for not being nominated for an Oscar. What are your picks? The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - Shame - The Young Victoria - A Beautiful Mind - Moneyball - To The Wonder -

based legend Cliff Martinez's work on The Neon Demon comes to mind.
American Hustle had a soundtrack much better than the movie.

Adventureland is a great movie but in the movie you hear Replacements, NY Dolls, Husker Du, Big Star, Lou Reed AND the Velvet Underground (among others, Bowie, the best INXS song), it adds so much..........

based legend Cliff Martinez's work on The Neon Demon comes to mind. I still think The Neon Demon is a legitimately good film, but Cliff's score is all-time good. What a time to be alive when the best composers working in film are Cliff, Jonny G and Nick Cave.

Suspiria's soundtrack is mostly what elevates it from a good horror film to a great one.

Candyman, Poison Ivy (1992)... 90s gotta be full of these.
Also, your first pick might be my absolute favorite piece of film score... and I also dig the film.

Nearly every Jerry Bruckheimer production has a way better soundtrack than the movie deserves... as far as senseless actioners are concerned.

- Star Wars episodes I-III (a lot of John Williams stuff actually... Hook...E.T.) - The Illusionist (2006) - The Fountain - Terrence Malick's post-2012 output - Cosmopolis - Inherent Vice

Some examples of excellent scores from shitty or poor films.
(Intrada just released a full edition of this back in October)
So many more I could list.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri comes to mind. The movie was a bit of a mess, but the music was solid throughout.

How hasn’t anybody said Sunshine yet? Although a good movie, this track is all time great:
