' Electric Light Orchestra ' that is.
Was listening to their 'Best of' album again this morning...what a day to start the day! Don't bring me down, Shine a little love, turn to storm, Wild West Hero... and of course that one. I wonder if there is a more flat out positive vibe band out there.
Can't rank/order a top 5 right now. u got any special favorites from them?

Well they are right up there because ELO comes from a period where they were neither cynics nor those trying to put over something lurid - as in most Rock and Roll - so what you had in effect with them was a positive band who could really play - a sophisticated but quirky pop group more or less.
They sort of are out of step with all of their peers at least when they first emerged - certainly in Progressive Rock and classic Rock (except maybe for stuff like Wings). I always though Strange Magic was a really interesting song - it starts with weird orchestration (like a movie!), then has piano like it's a gentle ballad, then it gets all lush and complicated - it gets faster and strange falsetto vocals with a real simple chorus and lyrics that make it seem simple but the recording of it is anything but - all this layering of sounds and backing vocals. Like seriously, just the production of the song must have been exhausting, lol.

They're super cheesy, but the big hits (Turn to Stone, Livin' Thing, Strange Magic, Sweet Talking Woman, Mr. Blue Sky, and of course 10538 Overture, presumably what the OP meant by that one) are very fun.
They're a little like Revolver/Sgt. Pepper era Beatles without the esotericism and experimentation (in other words minus the acid). So the Wings comparison makes sense.

I meant 'Mr. Blue', the one I've heard playing everywhere. first time in 2004's The Magic Round table (which I just read is known as one of the worst children movies ever lol). Hadn't listened to 'Overture' until now; already feel I can listen to it forever. Cheesiness rules!

They're one of my absolute favorite bands. Jeff Lynne is second to none as a music producer and the band takes up where The Beatles (my favorite band) left off and blew it up on a grander, operatic level. I'd say listen to A New World Record and Out of the Blue, their two finest albums.

Indie Goddess Juliana Hatfield has a new album of ELO covers out - and like her covers albums of The Police and Olivia Newton John (um) it's a lot of fun......good record to play while you're watching football with the sound turned down......
