We've been talking about for weeks and it seems like three actresses are locked for a nod in Best Actress: Ronan, Robbie and McDormand. But, with Streep missing BAFTA/SAG and Hawkins not campaigning and having the genre bias against her, it's been talked about the possibility of a surprise nomination come Oscar time. Vicky Krieps seemed like the scene stealer when the review for Phantom Thread arrived, but she hasn't made any splash. Dench is M.I.A., Bening showed-up unexpectedly at BAFTA... Chastain has been pointed out as a plausible possibility, given the GG nod and the amount of campaign she's doing. But today, I thought: maybe Michelle Williams will be the one to replace Streep or Hawkins. We're not talking about her, but she did get a GG nomination like Chastain, she's well-liked by the Academy, her movie got good impressions and is likely to get another actor (Plummer) in the race, plus the pay-gap scandal that surfaced social media these few past days puts her in great light. Suddenly, in Oscar-voting week, everyone's talking about her and the sympathy's on her side. I feel like this is the perfect outcome for to make a surprise apparition in the BA line-up. What do y'all think?

I believe Streep is still getting that 5th spot.

I suppose it's possible, as this particular controversy broke right as the last few days of Oscar ballots were being sent in, but I think four slots are spoken for and Williams is up against Streep for that last spot. Streep's shown precursor weakness, it's true, but she's also Meryl Streep, and unfortunately, she's never one to be counted out.
I think Williams misses, but this builds goodwill for her next nomination and possibly a win.

To me Hawkins is ahead of Robbie actually - but nobody seems to thinks so. I don't think that kind of film always resonates with the Academy and I know people think she's a lock but I don't see it .
Michelle Williams is a great actress - best of generation level - and she could get 5th. Robbie, Streep, Bening, Williams, Chastain could be 5th - much, much deeper than their male counterparts and I don't think there's a huge gap between them.

I think Molly's Game's guild support is making Chastain a serious threat, but betting against Streep is probably a bad idea.
And I think Hawkins will be fine given the overwhelming love for the movie.

I really think 4 spots are locked. So that leaves Streep, Chastain and Williams vying for the last spot. I think this story will definitely help Williams, but it's tough to bet against Streep. Strong year.

Strong year. This. I also think the story broke out a bit late into the oscar voting process... had it dropped last week, she'd have a much stronger chance. Still, she is deeply respected, All the Money in the World looks slightly more visible than The Post at the moment... both Streep and Williams are extremely respected and Williams has never won, which I think lends her some extra good will (sadly that did not work for Adams last year and she seemed a much stronger candidate than Williams this year). Would love if Williams bumped out Streep though.

I sure hope not. She isn't miserable enough in this movie to go with her nominated quartet.
I could be wrong, but I don't really get the impression that she cares much about this kind of thing? She doesn't seem much of a game player who could channel this recent news coming her way into something bigger the way that others might. It's probably at least partly that kind of thing that caused her to get paid biscuits for the reshoots.

Why do some of you guys still under estimate Hawkins? She is pretty much locked for a nomination, IMO.

Both Hawkins and Streep are in. So are McDormand, Ronan, Robbie. Outside of these 5, Actress unlike Actor, really isn't that competitive this year.
When it comes to Streep, the conventional precursor showings can be tossed out. Anyone would be foolish to bet against her, especially when The Post is one her more visible roles of the last few nods.
