My gut is telling me that this is going to be the blue-moon of a year where Streep misses. Historically this is a foolish prognostication but it just feels like her shine has dulled a bit with the Weinstein thing. Gut feeling is translation for "I don't want Meryl Streep to be nominated, so if I post it on a message board, it will come true, lol.
Someone ALWAYS makes this prediction every year - because of a gut feeling, and they are ALWAYS wrong. If anything, Hollywood will rally around her because of the Weinstein scandal.
Yeah. I bet against her for Into the Woods. Never again. lol

Yes, I'm still predicting Streep, but I feel like The Post has seriously underwhelmed that anything is possible. It will still get in Best Picture and most likely Best Actress, but I would have never guessed that Streep or the film would have missed at SAG of all places. Or that it would miss WGA, and that I, Tonya would get in over it.

Seems like Netflix can't catch a break, honestly I thought Mudbound would do better given how oscar baity it is.

Guys, was Darkest Hour even eligible here? It's a UK production with no US involvement. Oh, and... British Films have been nominated here before. Hell The King's Speech won this award. Being American is not a requirement. This isn't AFI.

Since the PGAs have been awarding (1989), only five films have been nominated that weren't in some way financed by US companies.
The Piano Life is Beautiful Billy Elliot Brooklyn Ex Machina
So, it's not impossible, but extremely rare. There's obviously a regional bias, so I wouldn't count out Darkest Hour just yet.

PGA is a crucial precursor, but BAFTA has yet to throw their hat in the ring. We do need to see where the British contingent falls, and I suspect with Focus's two big films being Britain-centric, that's where we'll see them really ramp it up.

Crazy that Molly's Game showed up here. Loving this overperformance. I'm gonna be so disappointed when Chastain gets snubbed.
