He was up for the role at one point. How do you think he would've fared?
I think he would've given Oliver a more rugged, broody quality compared to Hammer's shiny arrogance. I do believe that things worked out for the best, however. Not to downplay Labeouf's strengths as a performer but the very visible contrast between the existing leads is a big part of why the film works, IMO.

Oliver probably would have come off as even more of an entitled asshole, if that were at all possible. I think LaBeouf is a talented performer, but I don't think he would've been that much of an improvement (although I might be able to readily believe he's in his early twenties over Armie Hammer).
Of course, it's all for naught if he doesn't have chemistry with Chalamet.

Do you think he'd be believable as an intellect?

Do you think he'd be believable as an intellect? Not in the slightest.

Do you think he'd be believable as an intellect? I don't think an intellect has one type of look. The replies on this thread are pretty ignorant.

I was thinking more of his general attitude and bearing rather than his looks. He doesn't seem to have much range as an actor. His best performance is in Sia's "Elastic Heart" music video IMO.

I'm sure he'd have worked in his own way, but my primary problem is that he's far too old/looks too old to be playing that role. Age wise Chalamet is maybe pushing it, but he at least looks like a baby, and thus can get away with putting a guys shorts over his head, and dry humping a bed. Imagine Shia doing the same thing...

Oops... Thought that was too stupid to be real I don't see that either, I mean make-up, lighting, good acting can mask anything, but him as either an intellectual or the object of any intelligent young persons desires is almost as much of a stretch as what I was saying before. Also agree with what you said about the contrast being part of the strength of it.

I think if you played up his Jewness with some circular glasses and dad hair, he could pass for an intellectual. He doesn't come across as "dim" to me the way someone like Mark Wahlberg overtly does.
