I think Oldman wins, but Chalamet is in the same position as Ronan and Robbie, in that if he loses this year, he probably becomes a frontrunner for next season. They have Mary Queen of Scots, he has Beautiful Boy. It doesn't get much baitier than a meth addiction drama from Amazon/Plan B. I suspect they'll push him in Supporting and focus on Carell for leading.

I hope there's an upset and Franco wins it and he takes Tommy with him to accept the award. Just how cool would that be!!!

But yeah, it's probably Oldman - showy, biopic of a famous person, leading critics awards, respected, beloved veteran, overdue etc etc.

Gary Oldman because he is Gary Goddamn Oldman
I hope Franco wins. I want to hear the name "Tommy Wiseau" mentioned in an Oscar acceptance speech

Chalamet. I don't think his performance was all that amazing though and would rather see Franco or Kaluuya win.

If Chalamet is cheated out of a win, he will be a future Oscar winner with multiple nominations. I can also see him at some point moving into A-list status.
And unlike Oldman, who never achieved A-list status in Hollywood, Chalamet will not have to wait 40 years to get an Oscar.

Haven't seen Oldman yet but:
I usually say the "should win-will win" argument doesn't apply with the Oscars but that's because I argue for the most horrible of all things - the make up Oscar. Yup, it's fine with me. Maybe not fine in all cases but certainly fine with me this year. Last year, I didn't need Denzel Washington (who was great) to get his 3rd for a lesser performance than Affleck. There was nothing to "make up".
But:
This year, well that isn't the case - it's the Oscars, it's for show and such and the fact that Gary Oldman one of the top 5 British actors of his generation (or higher than top 5) doesn't have one yet and so far has just 1 nomination is thoroughly depressing and gross.
Maybe it's depressing and gross that Chalamet loses this year and I understand that POV.
But..........not for me..........Oldman.
