It's Courtenay for me.

honestly one of my biggest gripes with Doctor Zhivago is that Tom Courtenay is under-utilized, because he's brilliant with what little he had to work with.

I love the novella The Loneliness of The Long Distance Runner and the film as well - they are a major influence on me and my life I'd say but still........Finney.
I would say sometimes things get iffy in that whole class of films - Burton is older but Look Back In Anger fits into it too.

I think of these chaps, it's definitely Courtenay. Finney runs him a strong race, but Courtenay pips him to the post and pretty well schools him in The Dresser (which is no mean feat, and Al is definitely firing on all cylinders there). But Peter O'Toole and Oliver Reed are definite contenders to the crown as well.

And I'd add Terence Stamp because of his performance in 'The Collector.' stephen - I love Peter O'Toole and like Oliver Reed, but which performances of theirs would qualify them for this label?
