After last years Patriots Day another great and emotional film about the Boston Marathon bombings. This one focuses on one of the real life victims Jeff Bauman and his struggle to identify himself with his new life.
What I loved was that director David Gordon Green did not put the struggle itself too much into the focus, as we have seen that thousand of times before, what is more in focus is actually the relationship between Jeff and his girlfriend which presents an interesting dynamic to the film. A reason for that are the great characters and the two wonderful performers who play them. First of all Jake Gyllenhaal was once again great. The way he developes a character that is an every-day-dude who has a crush on this local girl that after a tragedy suddenly becomes an unwanted hero and doesnt really find his place in all of that , is undoubtedly great. He has at least two scenes that sent shivers down my spine. The other performance that truly stands out is the one of Tatiana Maslany. And in her case I would go so far and say she even topped Gyllenhaal's game. What a emotional, honest and absolutely REAL performance. Not a showy character at all but she did so much more than she play the girlfriend role, she really became that role. One of the few performances this year that were absolutely NAILED from the beginning to the end. She really was that girl that is worth fighting for every personal war you have. She made me fall in love with her character.
And last but certainly not leased we have Miranda Richardson who wonderfully embodies this Boston white trash stereotype kind of character but gives her a heart (even if it is hidden deep down).
A good and important film about struggle and even more about love.

Rating: 8/10
