Umm...okay, it's not nearly as bad as critics are saying...but it IS pretty bad. You know what, maybe I'm wrong, but I can't help but dump all the blame on Max Landis. I almost want someone to accuse him of something nasty, true or not, just so that fucking dweeb can stop getting work. This has all the staples of something with his name on it - cool concept, shitty execution, sidelined female characters, idiotic dialogue he thinks is clever or funny, and overly blatant and heavy-handed social commentary. Will Smith actually says "fairy lives don't matter" at one point. The villain is underdeveloped, as are most of the major characters that aren't Smith or Joel Edgerton. The make-up on the orcs and elves are cool, I'll give it that. However, the one thing that COMPLETELY killed it for me...well, it's a spoiler, and it bears some exposition, sooooo... A "Bright" is the one that can control the wand that everyone wants. They keep talking about a prophecy that suggests Edgerton's orc cop will be able to wield it as he's implied to be a Bright. NOPE. It's SMITH that can hold it without exploding. And NOTHING ELSE AFTER THAT IS EXPLAINED. Is he magic? Can humans be Brights? Jakoby is the more interesting/sympathetic protagonist, and Ward is just an obnoxious asshole, but it's SMITH, so OF COURSE HE'S THE FUCKING CHOSEN ONE. And yet, it's getting a sequel. Blech.

It's really kind of astounding that a movie about orcs, elves, and fairies in the world of a gritty cop movie could be so uninteresting. I do agree, though, that its critical reception is (predictably) blowing it out of proportion.

I go into every film with an open mind and give them a chance .... but WTF is this shit?! (I'm currently streaming it on Netflix) and good lord is it so stupid & heavy handed.
David Ayer is so damn hit or miss as a director its frustrating . I found End of Watch & Fury to be quite good (ditto on his screenplay for Training Day) but then he shits the bed with Suicide Squad & Sabotage ...and now this bs haha .

Considering in the trailer alone, they are about as subtle as a staple gun to the nutsack with their "satire" (if you can even call it that), I'm not at all surprised to hear that it's heavy handed.
Safe to say that I'm not gonna be visiting this anytime soon (was waiting on the critical reception).

I honestly think it may be worse than they say.
Was it really someone’s dream to combine Training Day with Skyrim? Just as tone-deaf, badly paced, and piss poorly edited as Suicide Squad (this movie’s geography is so bad, it makes a simple convenience store action scene incomprehensible), but at least Will Smith and Joel Edgerton try to spice up the weak material, even if the former is basically playing another version of himself, and the latter has to fight with his (admittedly really cool looking) makeup.
The film’s heavy-handed commentary is laughable at best (“Are you an Orc first, or a cop first?” Said by the black man. Fuck off, Max Landis!), and for the most part there’s no reason for it to be set in this fantastical world. By the time the movie gets into its convoluted magical BS, getting bogged down by Vampire Academy girl, and utterly suffocates Noomi Rapace in a thoroughly boring villain role, any pretense of commentary and grit is casually chucked out the window. Why is Netflix so good with TV shows, and yet the quality control of their films is so poor?

It could still be his Star Wars.

It could still be his Star Wars. Attack of the Clones is not a standard he should strive for.

Although like I said, Landis doesn’t have a clue how to write competent or noteworthy female characters.

It had potential as Will Smith usually shines in the role of an authority, especially when he is allowed to bring humor and irony in. Also David Ayer proved with "End of Watch" that he is the right director for a cop film. The idea to mix that genre with fantasy was ambitious but could have worked well if handled correctly. Too bad the film was full of flaws. First of all the awful screenplay. Not only the dialogue were outrageous but also the structure was all over the place. I think the film could have worked with the fantasy setting but without the overload of fantasy elements, kind of like "District 9" maybe. Too bad they tried to go a different route with it and tried to build up an own legacy which was too ambitious. Will Smith was not really good. I don't know what it was but he really had not the energy nor charisma he usually has, especially in films like that. I really muss 90s Big Willy. Joel Edgerton on the other hand was really great and gave an emotional performance and was even able to add a lot of depth to his awful dialogues. Noomi Rapace was awfully wasted, I mean besides her last couple of minutes screen time she hardly had any dialogue. Too bad to waste such an actress, who may have been physically been perfect for there role, with one word dialogues like "Traitor" … oh well. The look was good, some of the action scenes well done, I did like the soundtrack and the make up as pretty good as well.
