Jammed field...
Guillermo Del Toro Paul Thomas Anderson Christopher Nolan Luca Guadagnino Greta Gerwig Martin McDonagh Steven Spielberg Denis Villenueve Patty Jenkins Jordan Peele
I think if Ridley makes the five then he could be our winner. Who else has a better narrative? He's an 80 y/o respected vet who hasn't won yet. And he's very much in the dialogue bc of All the Money's unprecedented turnaround. GG nod gives him some more attention. And it helps that the reviews (thus far) are mostly positive...

I doubt he gets a nom. He hasn't exactly been lighting up these critics awards in terms of nom, and he didn't get nominated for The Martian either. He could be a surprise choice, but I don't see All The Money in The World going anywhere despite the acclaim it has. We'll see.

All the Money is way baitier and coming out in a much more prime spot, rather than Oct 2. As for critics awards, it may well be cus they haven't seen the film yet that it hasn't been showing up.

I don't see it myself. There are more established names (in terms of the year, not career) ahead of him, and it's a pretty packed field. I just don't see who misses out for him, and I don't think he'd win even if he got in. I think, however, that he's got enough goodwill with this and The Martian that he could be a powerful threat for whatever comes next.

The praise for the film has centered around Plummer and Williams. I think if it hits it will probably stay in the acting categories possibly adapted screenplay because there is room.

Nope, but it would be funny. I would choose him over someone like Spielberg

Patty Jenkins isn't in contention, and neither are Villenueve or PTA to be honest. Scott definitely isn't.

I can't help but think how directors vote for directors. Among his colleagues PTA is tops. Even though he missed for The Master... I think Phantom Thread will play more "palatable" with Academy voters. And with Ridley I'd go further.... I think his seeming success with All the Money puts him right into the discussion. Directors are the ones who'll truly empathize with the logistical nightmare of retooling 22 scenes as fast as he did, among everything else. And if/when he gets a nod I think then there'll be the "career-win" possibility.

Also nobody is looking to give a "career win" to a 47 year old with one nomination in the catagory.
