coming from someone who has been a Villeneuve fan for several years and enjoyed Blade Runner 2049 quite a bit, I can confirm it is NOT a masterpiece Stopped reading when I saw your avatar. Ben Shapiro really?

Stopped reading when I saw your avatar. Ben Shapiro really? he's a bright guy, at least in comparison to a lot of the big right wingers You know just cause he talks fast it doesn’t mean he’s smart.

He went to Harvard Law School, that must count for something So did Bush jr. Bush's dad was US senator when he went to Harvard, I don't think he would be easy to reject. And I don't think he's stupid. Shapiro graduated from High School at 16, went to Harvard, and made a name for himself on his own merit. That takes a certain amount of intellect, even if you disagree with his politics.

There are far more mediocre films getting circlejerked by awards groups... pretty sure if you can handle that, then you can handle a few people on a message board, I wasn't singularly implying that this board, or maybe some awards shows, are the only places wherein people shower it with unwarranted accolades; the praise extends beyond here to the vast majority of film circles, so it's obviously going to get a tad grating to hear it be called " the best science-fiction film of all time" or " better than Scott's original" on frequent occasion. I can see what you're saying/where you might be coming from, but I've just seen far more hyperbole for other films this year to the point where 2049 is pale in comparison.

The only movie I've seen more than once this year is Wind River, which while is a **** movie and one of my favorites of the year, still wouldn't be deemed a masterpiece in my eyes. With a more skilled and experienced directing, that movie would have been a masterpiece. The writing and acting are masterful, simply one of the year's best Yeah, I can only imagine what could have been done with say Villanueve (since he took Sheridan's weakest script so far an elevated it immensely) at the helm for what I think is Sheridan's best script. Still, it's a damn fine first for him behind the camera. Hopefully he'll just get better and better. Side note: very bummed that the script and Renner were left in the dust this awards season.

I still maintain that while Renner is one of the best things about the film and wouldn't be undeserving of an Oscar nod, his casting is one of the weak points of the film. It demanded a native actor, as I think it would've lent a lot of credibility to the themes of the film and wouldn't have had the white savior aspect of it clouding it. You don't have to change a thing about the dialogue or character beyond replacing Renner with someone like Zahn McClarnon.

That definitely would have been pretty awesome, but I think we all know that he needed a name actor to probably get it made.

It was made fairly cheaply ($11 million budget) and as much as I love Jeremy Renner, he ain't exactly a "name."

Villeneuve would have been perfect, actually my first choice, or someone like Kathryn Bigelow. But still, props to Sheridan for doing solid work on his debut. As for Renner and the script being constantly ignored this awards season: 'The world is not fair', that's all I can say

Blade Runner 2049 is closest to me. Couldn’t give a fuck less what people think, I thought it was magnificent.

I haven't seen anything from this year that I'd consider a masterpiece so far, but I have watched several films that I thought were pretty great. Detroit, Dunkirk, The Last Note and Bad Genius are my favorites so far.

I wouldn't quite say that they are masterpieces, but I thought Coco, A Ghost Story, Dunkirk and Newton were magnificent.

Blade Runner 2049 Call Me By Your Name Phantom Thread Do you consider any films this year so far a masterpiece? If so which movies? Maybe Dunkirk and Blade Runner 2049. That would already be two more than in whole 2016, despite I've only seen a handful of movies this year so far. But I still have to see them a second time before I can be sure.

I saw it twice in theaters . Its not quite a masterpiece but damn is it so good! Renner was so badass in it and its a shame he won't get any award noms this year ....oh well.

I don't LOVE Shapiro, and I often disagree with him, but I do think he's smart, consistent, and entertaining to listen to. Far better than most American political commenters from the left and right (and that's honestly not saying much).
