Live by Night (2016) -- Why did nobody like this? It's a bit unfocused, sure, but any story on this scope is bound to be. The characters are sympathetic, the moral dilemmas are powerful, and I practically came over all those nice suits and hats. Affleck's worst film, to be sure, but the guy has a marvelous track record. 7/10
Terror in Resonance (TV show) -- A lousy suspense anime that I only finished because my sister wanted to watch it. Bland characters, stupid plot, and by god that ending was offensive. 3/10
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) -- Not my review, but this guy states everything that I feel about the movie: letterboxd.com/thejoshl/film/war-for-the-planet-of-the-apes/ 5/10
Toni Erdmann (2016) -- I've taken shits with more artistic merit. There's not one laugh to be had in this bloated tale of an obnoxious father setting out to ruin his daughter's life. To be fair, it's already ruined, but having this asshole show up is just turning up the heat in hell. 1/10
Fences (2016) -- Denzel Washington the actor delivers some of his best work here. Denzel Washington the director screws it all up. The problem is that the paragraphs upon paragraphs of monologues and rapid fire arguments work on stage (you're talking directly to the audience, creating a rapport with them), but don't work on film. The camera keeps some of that... energy? I don't know, it keeps the spark of a great play away. And Washington is so intent on filming every word, all three billion of them, that it becomes an overload of information. There's a lot to like here, but it needed to slow down, take a breath, and not rely solely on the actors getting through 3 hours of dialogue in 2 hours. 6/10
Inglourious Basterds (2009 rewatch) -- Dammit, Brad Pitt's Italian is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen. 10/10
The Absent-Minded Professor (1961) -- Fred MacMurray is a jackass for 90 minutes, but gets the girl when he proves that he's more obnoxious and criminal than the rest of the cast full of obnoxious criminals. 5/10
