I threw Hailee Steinfeld a pity vote here because I have a feeling she'll be demolished in the poll; although, to be honest, even though she's not the best actress and could still use room for improvement, I don't think Ronan in Lady Bird was that much better than Steinfeld in The Edge of Seventeen.
I think Ronan was maybe more natural, but I thought Steinfeld did a wonderful job too even though she had the more maybe melodramatic material. Likewise, I found Lady Bird and Edge of Seventeen about even. Lady Bird maybe more true to life in some ways, and Laurie Metcalf was just wonderful and reminded me of my own mother so much which really got me especially the end. However, like moonman157, I felt that Lady Bird was like a greatest hits compilation trying to cram everything in (first boyfriend is gay, being in the school play, fighting with your best friend because you're hanging out with "cooler" people, boyfriend who seems deep but really isn't, prom, graduation, realizing that your hometown isn't so bad after all). Of course, I really enjoyed it and don't think it's a bad movie, but I guess I'm just sort of perplexed by it being the all time best reviewed movie on Rotten Tomatoes. I guess babygooseRonan it's a truly unhateable movie which I can see. I really enjoyed it, but best reviewed movie of all time great, I don't know.
Anyhow, I really enjoyed Edge of Seventeen as well, and while it was cliche in some ways too (brother and sister's best friend fall in love, hot guy is really a jerk, sister realizes that brother doesn't have the perfect life, mother and daughter come to understand each other by the end), I thought it was very well done coming of age film too.

Lady Bird is the better film, it's evenly controlled and mostly well-written, it's fine. It's also very conventional. Edge of Seventeen is a lot heavier (and emotionally saggy) than it needs to be, it's clunky, but it kinda works because of Hailee Steinfeld - she's great (better than Saoirse). It's a complex character and she's constantly swinging from deep self-loathing and slightly sarcastic spite. Steinfeld stacks the high-strung confusion and sadness of those wobbly early years with ease.

Damn, didn't expect Steinfeld to be in the lead here. She was great no doubt about it, but Ronan was much better in my opinion.

Didn't care for either of the films, but both performances were pretty solid. I'll pick Steinfeld, but it could go either way tbh.
