Alien: Covenant (2017) -- I discuss this betrayal here: movie-awards-redux.freeforums.net/thread/4653/another-thread-which-franchise-movie 3/10Kong: Skull Island (2017) -- The most random mishmash of random gory violence and over-the-top goofy characters I've seen in recent memory. Tonally all over the place. 3/10Lion 2016) -- Perfectly acceptable Oscar bait. I don't have much against the film (pretty much every character was pretty one note, but that isn't a problem in itself if the plot is interesting), but it never really excited me either. 6/10Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell (MST3K) -- I should really remember to stop drinking Pepsi while watching this show. It has the tendency to go running down my shirt at some point due to uncontrollable laughter. "You clever bastard. So the editor's working with you?" 8/10Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014 rewatch) -- Reacquainting myself with the story in preps for War. The characters are all shallow, one note caricatures, but what a plot! So few pieces of speculative fiction dare to go for the big themes and ambitions that this film does. Unfortunately, I keep coming back to those characters. They work as placeholders for the story to work through, but not as people in their own right. And in a movie dealing with such weighty stuff, that can damage what you're trying to create. It's like they wanted to make a great Shakespearean tragedy, but didn't go through the effort of working out anything more than motivations for each character. 7/10 because it all works, I'm just complaining because it should have been even more.

Boss Baby (not that bad) - 6.5 / 10 Coco - Absolutely loved it. Gorgeous animation, great characters, a strong message of family, and the last act had me bawling like a baby. I'll have the song Remember Me stuck in my head for a while. - 10 / 10 Three Billboards - Thought this was great. It's a dark black comedy, but the performances are aces, and the movie unravels in a way I didn't expect it to. It's some good stuff. - 8.5 / 10

My problem with Pixar is that they rely on their buddy movie formula to such an extent that it overpowers anything else in the plot. In every damn movie.

My problem with Pixar is that they rely on their buddy movie formula to such an extent that it overpowers anything else in the plot. In every damn movie. It's an "adventure film", but there isn't a buddy buddy type team-up (it's not every Pixar film either technically, A Bug's Life is more like Seven Samurai for example), it's more like a "family of the dead type pairing" by the end, and the character of Hector has a lot of focus, but Miguel is the only real central protagonist of the entire film. If you didn't like Inside Out though, I'm not sure you'd 100% care for it. It's surprisingly quite "light" on jokes at points though.

A week of re-watches, and all on the big screen.
Nebraska - Always thought this is well-shot and well-acted but filled with boring or retarded characters (I suppose that's 'small-city-folks for ya!). Watching it with other people definitely had something to do with me enjoying it a bit more though... and I appreciated June Squibb's presence this time around. Its...fine?
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Once Upon a time In Disney studio, it was true Art that was being made. This one remains one of the most influential and magical films ever made. One classic chapter after another, and when it was over we all left with a sense of charm and wonder, as if we had become babies again.
Interstellar - Still a loud and glorious mess. Fucking thing's score gave me an awful headache that night.

Saw Stronger last night. I think it took a very interesting tack at not really delving into the event itself (we have Patriots Day for that), but it feels incredibly scattershot. I honestly think that everyone was cranked up to eleven when, really, a five or six would've been more than enough. Loud families, particularly big ones that are representative of communities like Boston (i.e. The Fighter) have to be really careful not to become intolerable, and where I feel The Fighter succeeded, this one sadly missed the mark. Even Miranda Richardson, who I generally really like, was a bit much, although I will say that she certainly did well with the accent and was believable. I just didn't really buy the pathos of her character as much as, say, Melissa Leo in a similar sort of role. With that said, the film relies on the crucial, committed turns of both Gyllenhaal and Maslany, both of whom work very well alone and against each other. I wouldn't say either one should be a shoo-in for an Oscar nod or anything, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at them getting in, either. Ultimately, I think both of them deserved a stronger film (pun not intended).
