La winners don't usually translate to oscar but one category they seem to be on point is director.

I think so now. He's been dominating the critics' awards so far, and while that doesn't always translate to winning the televised awards, he's a veteran who could definitely be considered "due". Plus, perhaps winning the audience award at TIFF and winning so many other audience awards wasn't the best thing for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri because the backlash started, or maybe the backlash would have happened anyways. It seems that the backlash that I've seen is all centered around Rockwell's character, so I think that's definitely going to hurt him now that Dafoe is dominating. If awards were split, or Dafoe wasn't even placing anywhere, I think Rockwell could possibly comeback, but since there seems to be another good alternative that voters can go to instead of Rockwell. I think that veteran factor will come huge into play. The Academy loves to award well reputed actors in the supporting category now and then and this seems like a good chance for Dafoe, who also seems to be quite a well-liked person. That are two things not to be under estimated, but as we all know, if we can admit it, such preferences always can come into play, cause in terms of the liking of performances there often isn't much to separate one from the other. well, one factor we need to remember is that the Oscars are voted on by peers so it is not always about the best.

Yeah, but even if it was: Who or what is the "best" is always a subjective opinion.

Wow! Shocked that Mary J. Blige was actually a runner-up since I've read most people say that she was fine but not awards worthy. Plus, I'm shocked she won over Hong Chau, Tiffany Haddish, Allison Janney, etc.
Great for Laurie Metcalf. I saw Lady Bird yesterday, and while I liked it, I don't think I found anything Oscar worthy except Laurie Metcalf.

Blige is getting a lot of attention, but the anti-Netflix sentiment might hurt her in the academy is really the biggest issue.

YES Jonny and Laurie! Also stoked for Blade Runner's and Dunkirk's respective wins. The Dafoe vs. Rockwell race is indeed fun to follow; I'm leaning towards Dafoe though am happy for them both.

Hmmm, really surprised that Janney is not doing better. I guess we have to wait until the big dogs bark.

I guess they're taking a break now for lunch because they haven't updated their Twitter on what award is up next, and someone had posted pictures of their catering at another forum.
So far The Shape of Water has done well. It really needed this, and it would help Hawkins a lot of if she wins here too. I think that Michael Stuhlbarg and Allison Janney were hurt the most so far. I read that neither were mentioned in the conversation for their wins while Armie Hammer, Jason Mitchell, Tiffany Haddish, and Tatiana Maslana were among some of the names.
Double nominations hasn't happened since 1991. I thought that Call Me By Your Name could since Best Supporting Actor isn't as strong as it was when Spotlight was in the running, but I thought Stuhlbarg would show up somewhere by now. It's worrisome because his profile isn't as high as Armie Hammer's who is just everywhere right now.
With Janney, I've seen people say that she can win the televised awards which is certainly possible, but I don't know why Metcalf wouldn't because Lady Bird looks to be very strong overall, and Best Supporting Actress feels like the best place to award it since there won't be any competition from Get Out, The Post, or Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in that category whereas in Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay there will be.

You guys have no idea how strongly and whole-heartedly I'm rooting for Defoe this season, despite being practically in love with Rockwell. He gives the best supporting turns ever and has so much range. Wasn't it the same year he was in both Wick and Budapest?. A psychopath in a movie about hotels and a protective figure in a movie about assassins! He's always the best surprise to me in any movie.
Just came here to pour my heart and congratulate his fans for this win. Can't wait to see him hold an Oscar next year! Go Willem!

Best Screenplay: Get Out - Winner Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - Runner-up
I know there will be some debate here, but I'm fine with these. It gives TBOEM another boost too.

Cinematography category will be a bloodbath this year!!! Deakin's chance is getting smaller : Unless people are retarded, Deakins will take this. Dunkirk would be a worthy winner though

I liked Get Out, so congrats Jordan Peele. But also fuck you at the same time, because Three Billboards' screenplay shits on Get Out

Unless people are retarded, Deakins will take this. Well I've heard people are this sometimes - and often in even much worse ways than voting for the "wrong" movie.

I really think you are overestimating how important a runner up award at a critics award is. Major critics awards only matter at all (and by the end of the year almost not at all) because of publicity and the fact that the entertainment sites report them. They rarely report runners up.

You're probably right, but I don't want to downplay Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missour yet since it could potentially win Best Actress or Best Picture still.
