Seems to me his films always sort of get shit on, but those same people respect the hell out of what he's trying to do. Would that fit in with your view of him?

He's far better than his harshest critics think he is, but he's definitely an acquired taste and lately, he has more misses than hits.

I like some of his early works but don't think I liked anything he has made in last 20 years or something.

I think the Fifth Element's visual effects still hold up to today.

He's one of those cases who walked the completely wrong way. He once was a very good director, who could have become a great one. Subway was a good film full of promises. You could see that Besson was able to create atmosphere, form characters and make a fine film even if the story didn't offer that much. Le Grand Bleuwas even better and more interesting and while I don't like La femme Nikita I have to say that Leon is one of the best films ever made, having a great balance between thrill, action, story and emotions, while being also technical great. However after that everything went wrong and he left his path a bit. The Fifth Element was already just to fit the audience more and suddenly he chose to direct less and therefore produce action flicks. Maybe to make more money. I still think that his films - the few of his I've seen lately - mostly have interesting parts, but also some absurd ones and he can't mold everything into a good film.

I'm pretty sure I've only seen Leon, and I think it's pretty awful. I'm open to his other stuff, tho.

Lucy was downright ridiculous but actually managed to be... Fun ? and I definitely appreciate it's running time being under 90 mins. Wish more acclaimed blockbuster directors these days learn from a few of his decisions.

He takes himself way too seriously, but some of his films are watchable. I don't feel the least bit guilty for enjoying The Fifth Element, and Subway and La Femme Nikita are good. The Lady really stands out of his filmography -- wish he'd make more films like that. Lucy is a cinematic abortion and overshadows a lot of the good though.

Him giving women ass-kicking roles is not going to disguise the fact that I just flat-out dislike the movies. Not for me.
