Nicholson. I preferred all of them: DiCaprio, Damon, Farmiga, Sheen, Nicholson over Wahlberg. Ridiculous he was the film's sole acting nomination.

Nicholson was ok, but I don't think that performance was a particular stretch for him, he could have done that in his sleep. Wahlberg stole every scene he was in.

If I was just watching both performances against a black background removed from all context I'd probably pick Nicholson, only I've never seen the performance that way, and Nicholson's performance is so ridiculously grandiose that I remember the first time I watched it when he gets shot I sat there thinking to myself "What the hell, this can't be over. There's still got to be like half an hour to go!" Only then did the fact that the movie was not about his character but about the other two guys come back to me.
Watch Eric Tsang in Infernal Affairs, his power and influence is never called into question, but he's humble enough to realize it's not his freakin' movie. I remember whenever Scorsese would talk about the experience of working with Jack, and he'd always work so hard to put it nicely that the guy basically was totally out of control, and took over the production.
He's having a grand time, and he's a riot to watch like few others can be, but it's hugely selfish work. I'd give Wahlberg the win here by default, and I'm not a particularly big fan of his performance either.
