Streep, as always. The year is too strong for Best Actress to have only 4 nominees.

Definitely Streep. She's owed a few snubs.

I don’t get this thing about wanting and hoping Films we haven’t seen to bomb. Im not even talking just snubs. Once they actually come out and if we truly hate them, sure, but shouldn’t we *want* to like something instead of hoping for the worst?
But if I had just one, I don’t want Hans getting in for Dunkirk. Blade Runner’s better anyway, and I don’t get why Hans keeps falling back on gimmicks.

We should, but there is something to be said for the Academy's tendency toward "lazy picks." For my part, Streep could be absolutely wonderful, but I find this year's race much more interesting if she's out of it and it becomes less about anointing her with her fourth Oscar and more about seeing where the chips fall with a strong crop of actresses that don't have to contend with her because she's already claimed a spot due to her status. It's not like she's lacking for awards. But yeah, we should always be positive and hopeful for things to be good. I'll fight you on Dunkirk, though, although I agree Blade Runner 2049 would be better.

I'm on board the Streep train.
She'll still get in, though. Betting on Streep at the Oscars is always a safe bet.

Of course I haven't seen it, but 'I, Tonya' looks really tacky to me, and legitimately not good... I'll try to reserve judgment, but the mock-umentary subgenre is just so tired.

If Mudbound somehow gets traction, would be my choice in every category except for cinematography and even there it wasn't all that impressive.
Maybe Dunkirk ( mainly Hoytema, editing and score ), but the show needs raitings, so it doesn't bother me that much, same for Blade Runner.

Every composer has gimmick, either because there's only a few "tricks" they have up their sleeves and or because they get lazy, and like to rely on a single sound. It's not that hard to get really.

The year is too strong for Best Actress to have only 4 nominees. Where? Lead actress category is all-time weak this year. Can't say I agree there. Seven strong contenders with realistic shots at getting nominated (McDormand, Streep, Robbie, Ronan, Hawkins, Chastain, Dench), one unknown waiting in the wings rumored to be a scene stealer (Krieps), a handful that have a good combination of studio/role/reviews and would totally be threats for filler spots in most seasons (Winslet, Stone, Bening), some wild cards that could have passionate supporters (Lawrence, Prince). That's 13 right there. And that's just sticking to the ones who are actually in the conversation and not including outsiders who are massively deserving but will be critics' picks at best, like Daniela Vega and I assume Diane Kruger. Now compare that to Best Actor this year, where we have Oldman, Day-Lewis, Chalamet, Gyllenhaal, Hanks, Washington, maybe Franco and... no one else, really. Or Supporting Actress, which is a total wasteland with barely enough strong choices to make a top 5. Last year was also very strong for Best Actress (though 2017 has shaped up to be even better), but before that we usually had the 5 nominees and then maybe one or two additional names that pop up here and there. These past two seasons have been an embarrassment of riches in comparison to that.
