Koyaanisqatsi (1982 rewatch) -- The most beautiful of the cinematic tone poems from Reggio, this film strikes a chord with every beautiful image. 9/10
The Lost City of Z (2016) -- True stories would be more exciting if something actually happened in them. At least Pattinson is good. 5/10
Paterson (2016) -- Speaking of nothing happening (but in a good way!), we have this little gem. It's not so much of a movie in the normal sense as a quiet meditation on life and its beauty. Sure, it may put 90% of people to sleep (possibly in a literal sense), but this kind of goodhearted, gentle story is a rare beast, and I treasured it. Reminded me of the great TV show Kino's Journey in the way that it looks at the world and the people in it; not judgmentally, but rather with the deepest attempts at empathy. 8/10

Funny Ha Ha (2002) - Fantastic film that encapsulates everything (good) mumblecore is about. feels very much like the cinematic equivalent of some early Yo La Tengo album. 8.5-9/10 Results (2015) - it's refreshing to see a rom-com that treats its characters like three-dimensional, flawed, unique beings for a change. a breath of fresh air purely due to how weird and unpredictably the whole thing flows. ignore the imdb rating, this is great stuff. 8/10 Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) - pretty terrible movie that made me glad the 80s are over. 4/10 Fox and His Friends (1975) - Great film that makes me want to dive into fassbinder's filmography soon, extended thoughts here. 8/10

Appaloosa - 7.5 / 10 The Florida Project - Not sure I really enjoyed it (the overall characters were depressing, everyone seems to hate Dafeo in the film), but I did really like the kids perspective that the film showed. I agree with the complaint regarding the ending though. It was so abrupt, and just came out of the blue. Like really? Otherwise I got a lot out of the film. - 7.5 / 10 Gold Diggers of 1933 - 7 / 10 The American Friend - 8 / 10 Score: A Film Music Documentary - 6 / 10 - (Bit of a disappointment, too much focus on the obvious choices. As a film music fan, it's more like a beginners type-film). Michael Clayton - 7 / 10

The Book of Life (Hartley, 1998) - it's a Wax-inspired, apocalyptic end of the world cyberpunk with PJ Harvey in a starring role. i mean that sounds straight up incredible, but it's unfortunately kinda carried by how cool the themes are rather than the film itself. still there are some incredible visuals and i adore the soundtrack. 7
Paris is Burning (Livingston, 1990) - feel like this could have been much longer. i like portraits of subcultures, especially when there's a lot of subtext there as well. cool stuff. 7.5
spoke about em in the other thread
The Hedge Theater (Beavers, 2002) - 7
Lunch Break (Lockhart, 2008) - 8
Dans le noir du temps (Godard, 2002) - 8.5
Antiporno (Sono, 2016) - easily his most beautiful work, and this feels ostensibly more like 60s godard than probably any other film i've seen. i can definitely see this eventually becoming a favorite, because i already wanna see it again. i think sono works great in a shorter format as well. 8 or 8.5.

Agreed on Pattinson being pretty much the only good thing about The Lost City of Z. It's not that it's a horrible movie by any means... there just isn't anything good about it. It's a series of false starts that should start a narrative, but never do. I didn't mind anything about it, really. I just didn't like anything about it.

If you're referring to the constant alternation between his home and the amazonian jungle, doesn't Lawrence of Arabia do the same thing?

I didn't mind anything about it, really. I just didn't like anything about it. If you're referring to the constant alternation between his home and the amazonian jungle, doesn't Lawrence of Arabia do the same thing? Well, I didn't like Lawrence of Arabia either. I was young when I watched it though, I probably should give it another go. My problem isn't that it keeps switching between home and jungle, my problem is that the jungle never goes anywhere. Every expedition just winds up failing to reach the lost city, and we don't learn anything interesting about the characters in the process. No deep flaws (or virtues, for that matter) are ever revealed in our protagonist, he just goes home, does whatever stuff at home that the plot calls for, and then goes back. I get that this is the way real life works. Really, I do. But it doesn't make for good fiction. Edit: The home life sections tell us equally little about the characters. His fight with his wife about taking her to the jungle never amounts to anything, his antagonism with his son never goes anywhere, fighting in the Great War ultimately means nothing to the narrative.

Was gonna write something for each, but feeling a bit lazy at the moment. I already typed something up on Justice League anyway.
