Oldman Streep Rockwell Janney Three Billboards will not win two acting Oscars. Yes, I've come back around to predicting Streep again. I don't know that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri is going to be strong enough to win two acting awards even if it does win Best Picture, and McDormand doesn't seem like she cares about winning a second which leaves the door open for someone else. I guess Hawkins could win, but she just seems like such an anomaly to win in this category looking at trends since the late '90s. There's a path for Robbie if she wins the Globe, but I think ultimately the nomination will be her reward, and she'll probably win the next time out. Best Actor: Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour - I see some people, not here, but elsewhere, are bored with how predictable this race is and have tried to stir up trouble by bringing up Oldman's past. Before the season began, I thought it could spring up again, but since it hasn't at this point, it seems unlikely to come back, and even when Affleck's past was brought up last year, he still won. Best Actress: Meryl Streep, The Post - Word on The Post's screening last night seems to fall in line with it's winning Best Picture to it's similar to Bridge of Spies, but I still think with the political narrative when there's not really a strong frontrunner, it can still win Best Picture, and that Streep could win her fourth since Best Actress doesn't have a strong frontrunner either right now. It's possible that the Globes go with McDormand or Hawkins, but I think they'll want to recreate another moment like last years. Then after she gives another killer speech that goes viral, I can't see SAG going with anyone else. BAFTA might go with Hawkins or perhaps McDormand because I don't think they'll be swayed as much by a Streep speech unless at that point, the writing is on the wall, and they just decide to follow all the other televised precursors. Best Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri - Dafoe has been nominated twice before, but since A24's number one push is Lady Bird, and they're campaigning Brooklynn Prince in the leading category, it's possible that Dafoe is The Florida Project's only nomination. So I think that hurts his chances. Plus, Rockwell is very respected like Dafoe, but he's just been unlucky until now to never have been in the right material for that elusive Oscar nomination. There's also still very much a path for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri to win Best Picture if The Post's narrative fails to work, and that path is likely through Rockwell and Original Screenplay. Best Supporting Actress: Allison Janney, I, Tonya - I don't think it's quite a done deal yet because Lady Bird seems like it could actually be top 5 Best Picture material, and they might want to award it somewhere. However, Janney seems like she has a lot of really memorable moments in a role that could become iconic. She's also well liked and is hitting the campaign trail hard, so I can see maybe Metcalf winning many of the top tier critics' awards, but then Janney winning all of the televised awards.

Oldman McDormand Rockwell Metcalf
I'm a bit torn on Supporting Actress. On the one hand, Janney's performance looks much showier. On the other hand, Lady Bird looks to be the stronger film and in contentious races, that's usually the deciding factor. Then again, Janney may just sweep anyways and it won't be contentious.

and Rockwell takes the lead after Dafoe's snub yesterday... These overreactions are the norm for here. They will flip after just about every set of nominations or critics award. The ISA have no matching voters with Oscars. They mean incredibly little. They match the oscars on occasion but it's coincidence. Lots of awards bodies match up every year. There are only so many acclaimed films. My approach to dealing with predictions after awards like this is to think "will this groups nominations still matter after PGA, DGA, SAG and BAFTA?" The answer is almost always no.

Sorry MoonShadow, I've been meaning to do this before the end of November. Right after Thanksgiving, I had a dream that Laurie Metcalf won the Oscar. I never have dreams like that, so I think it might mean something.
Plus, Metcalf seems the best place to award Lady Bird.
So my predictions now are Oldman/Streep/Rockwell/Metcalf. (I would be happy with either Janney or Metcalf winning though.)
