I did not mind the digital snow. What I minded was the lack of character development that reasoned in very shallow characters which concluted into a film that dragged more than it deserved. Don't get me wrong. I still liked it. But when you waste a cast of such tremendous actors like Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer and Willem Dafoe it is destined to end up in a disappointment. I also do not try to compare it to the nearly flawless original of 1974 but if I did and see where the other one succeeded and which this remake failed it comes to one big thing: The fantastic investigation and interrogation scenes, which were here rather shallow and unimpressive. But to sum up the good things: Cinematography was fantastic. The images we got were outstanding and unforgettable. It created a nice atmosphere. I did like the score, even if it was a bit inconstant at times. The Production Design and general look were extremely satisfying. Some of the acting was good too. Kenneth Branagh for instance did a great performance as Hercule Poirot and perfectly nailed that character. I would not mind to see him revisiting that roe in the future again. Michelle Pfeiffer was great and the only time when I say one of the cast was better than its original counterpart. Johnny Depp held himself very well. No complains about him. Penelope Cruz was fine, but she is no Ingrid Bergman. Judi Dench was wasted but I did enjoy her scenes. Daisy Ridley also showed some versatility and I always like Willem Dafoe doing germans accents. So yeah no complaints about the cast itself, just about the material some of them were given. Sometimes I felt they were given the most emphasize on Branagh' schnauzer than on the characters, who actually are what makes the story interesting.

I don't even understand why this was remade tbh - you have a perfectly fine and better cast version and the material is classic and not up for a re-think at all. Like who thinks Branagh, the guy who botched Frankenstein and Sleuth should produce, direct and star in something this already defined?

Agreed; didn’t think I could be so uninterested in a film with Pfeiffer, Depp, Dafoe, Dench, etc. Who exactly were they targeting audience wise? Trailer always felt awkward, and kinda laughable with Imagine Dragons over it. What do you think of Branagh’s earlier directing efforts (besides Frankenstein)? I'm a big fan of his Hamlet.

Love Hamlet and Henry V which are not only spellbinding but full of interesting ideas and vitality and I kind of love a lot of Dead Again although it drifts to silliness at the end...........I really hated the "new" Sleuth - a Pinter screenplay for Godsakes, wtf.

Well this was the bothering thing for me anyway, knowing how it all turns out did not help the film not to drag…. but I guess they wanted to expose that (great) story and twist to a young audience who might not be too interested in older films with older actors they don't relate to. At least it was not a 1:1 remake like Psycho

Jesus fucking Christ this was fucking awful. Starts out painfully forced, gets going for a few minutes in the second act, and then crumbles so badly in the last 20 minutes I still can't quite figure out how they could look at the final cut and think that's a presentable finale. It's like Branagh had a dozen bad ideas as to how to go about revealing the twist and wrapping things up, couldn't decide which would be the shittiest and then decided to just throw all of them at the wall. There isn't a single inspired directorial choice here, to the point where it basically feels like it materialized spontaneously with no interference from a human being, or was perhaps directed by an AI. Everything they changed about Christie's novel is inexplicable, and completely betrays basic elements of Poirot's behavior and the logistics of the murder as she narrates it.
Dench and Pfeiffer fare best and are the only standouts in the whole thing, Colman, Dafoe and Cruz do well with what they're given but are ultimately wasted in parts that are barely a cut above cameos, Gad tries, Ridley has maybe two line deliveries that don't feel completely wooden, and Depp has long ago stopped giving a shit, but at this point I think someone might want to check his pulse just to make sure this isn't his decomposing cadaver that somehow wandered its way into a movie set.
Also, Branagh, for fuck's sake, if you're gonna make it a green screen orgy, at least make it good green screen.
Kudos for setting up the sequel in such a plain, obvious, tap water, white bread way, though. At least it's fitting with the 105 minutes that came before it.

Yeah, I'm still so looking forward to it inspite of the middling reviews.
