Directors: (give me recs on where to start with these ones, please) Herzog Aguirre, the Wrath of God or Nosferatu the Vampyre is an excellent place to start with Herzog.

I've never seen any films by these notable directors: Rossellini, Ray, Mizoguchi, Melville, Ford, Kiarostami, Tsai.
Here are some movie (tv miniseries included) series that I've never seen anything of: The Before Trilogy, Any of Bergman's Faith Trilogy, The Decalogue, any of the original Planet of the Apes.
And a list of notable movies that I haven't gotten around to. Here's my list of shame:
Lawrence of Arabia Ben-Hur Close Encounters of the Third Kind Last Year at Marienbad Andrei Rublev (high on my watchlist) Night of the Living Dead Wild at Heart Lost Highway The Elephant Man Dead Man For a Few Dollars More Gone With the Wind Lolita Eyes Wide Shut
My List of shame would be too long to post, but these are some of the films that came to my head at the moment.

Well my shame is the biggest of all. I'm no movie buff at all. I'm just a household mom who has so little time to watch movies despite liking them very much... I just got used to having my movie info fix from all you guys over at the imdb boards back in 2012. I wasn't even a member then, just a lurker. I remember Matt Fincher and Pleed the Fifth would be constantly arguing against LeoDi around that time and I just fell into the habit of following everybody's opinions of movies new and old. I discovered so many good movies by visiting the MA board such as Clue, Little Miss Sunshine, Sunshine. You all have been good guides over the years informing my must-watches and should-watches.

Clue!!!! If my constant harping on about the awesomeness of that film was in any way responsible for you seeing and enjoying it, then that makes me happy.

Directors: (give me recs on where to start with these ones, please) Mike Leigh judging by ur taste i'd say Naked would be a good start, followed by Secrets & Lies.

Well, since this is a "movie awards" forum, I think my #1 sin is that I've only seen around half of the best picture winners. And honestly, a lot of the ones left look pretty dull (and don't even get me started on some of the nominees).

With the exception of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, haven't seen a single Indiana Jones movie. Sergio Leone is a blind spot.

Sometimes I watch some movies in chunks, including movies that are under 2 hours. Additionally, falling asleep in the middle of a film is common practice for me, I am used to going back and watching what I missed.

Oh honeys, I have never at any time, past, present or future... seen anything Russian: Eisenstein, Tarkovsky, Putin's home movies, etc...
or ever been totally naked except for wearing just a babushka, while dancing wildly & provocatively while being shamelessly drunk on Smirnoff at a Putin Party at the Kremlin...
...they just haven't invited me.

I have seen 2 Kiarostami, 2 Herzog, 2 Cassavettes, 1 Antonioni, 0 Rohmer, 0 Ray, 0 Angelopolous, and 0 Akerman films Lul, I've seen 78 films from Rohmer & Herzog combined (and the number will definitely increase). How realities can differ I guess. But seriously: Get your lazy ass and start one of Rohmer's cycles right now. Or watch his debut, Sign of Leo at least. I'm at 0 for Angelopolous aswell though

Nah, it's a treat. I doubt Fellini made a better film post 8 1/2.

Haven't seen quite a few "essential" classic Hollywood epics, à la Lawrence Of Arabia, Gone With The Wind, Ben-Hur, and need to check out a lot more silent cinema, especially Griffith - Intolerance, Broken Blossoms, Way Down East all look good but I'm obviously going to start with Birth Of A Nation. Directors: (give me recs on where to start with these ones, please) Rivette Mike Leigh Nuri Bilge Ceylan Wong Kar Wai Jodorowsky Herzog Fassbinder Melville Rivette - Celine and Julie go Boating or Paris Belongs to Us. No first Rivette is going to be easy per se but these 2 seem like the most accesible. He is radically different from the norm. Mike Leigh - Naked. Nuri Bilge Ceylan - N/S anything either Wong Kar Wai - Chungking Express. Jodorowsky - El Topo or The Holy Mountain, doesn't matter too much. Herzog - Depends. If you can take a slow, hypnotic movie go Aguirre, otherwise Nosferatu, Bad Lieutenant or Everyone for Himself and God Against All (also often called The Enigma of Kaspar Hausar). Fassbinder - Fear Eats the Soul, The Marriage of Maria Braun or Veronika Voss Melville - Le Samurai. Consider not to start with Birth of a Nation. Griffith is a good director but Birth is besides being revolting also kind of a bore (though I might be making enemies saying this). Broken Blossoms I think makes for a much better start or Intolerance. My personal favorite is True Heart Susie (which was also one of Rivette's favorite film if I remember correctly).
