Just sat down to view this on the big screen. I've seen this once before, but there's a lot to remember, but I don't quite remember all of it. Will post thoughts after.
Please share your thoughts!

Masterpiece. Can't think of a single flaw. what about burning a cow alive for the sake of the film? or the nudity censorship via leaves (whereas other moments of nudity aren't censored)?

It is a masterpiece of photography and scenery. A visual image settles firmly into my memory. You can tell that each shot was planned like a painting.

Well I'd argue burning the cow isn't a flaw in the film itself, but the production of the film. As for the censorship... I mean, I guess...

It's certainly a technically perfect film in every aspect - it truly feels like you're witnessing an era so long ago like it's alive and well today. All that being said, aside from the first and last chapter, I struggled to really feel anything for its titular character. Could be his acting was partially bland, or it could just be that Tarkovsky spent so much time worrying about every other aspect that any emotional resonance with this main character that you have to spend four hours with didn't seem to matter much to him.
Obviously I'm a minority on this, as the only time I've ever seen someone discuss this film, it's to say it's a masterpiece and perfect. But I would be hard-pressed to give this a re-watch. Just don't find the main character that interesting at all.

The lead may be my favorite performance ever, it's a directing powerhouse, and has maybe the largest scope of any movie I've seen. One of my 50 or so favorite films.

9/10 astonishingly masterful at times... the opening scene, the pagan scene... but I think particularly the bellmaker stuff, which takes up like 40minutes in the latter half of the film.. I think it's one of the greatest "sequences" in cinema history. (Bellmaker is played by lead from Ivan's Childhood too!)

The part about the bell is so incredible because it makes this mundane thing seem earth shattering. At the end you get the sense that they've built a civilization.

It's among his greatest works and perhaps his most singular - no other film really looks or feels quite like it........sequences feel immediate and otherworldly at the same time, it's quite remarkable whenever I revisit it.
It's not my favorite of his, that is The Sacrifice, but when you have a filmography like Tarkovsky's almost any of his work is bound to strike some people as his very best.

It is one of the best films ever made. And yet it's probably just my 4th favorite Tarkovsky after Stalker, The Mirror, and The Sacrifice.
