Very happy for Rian Johnson . Still can't believe the guy that directed Brick is gonna be directing all these Star Wars movies haha. very cool! And this gets me more pumped for The Last Jedi now.

Okay, *this* is exactly what I’ve wanted to see them do with their side stories from the start! No more Skywalkers, no more origins and spin-offs, just an honest to god new story with new characters and worlds we’ve never seen before.
Disney is finally doing what they should do when they have a surefire moneymaker, using its status in order to experiment and take risks. And that they’re giving him all the time he needs to cement it makes me think they can pull it off (artistic expression triumphs). I will happily sit through a hundred more Rogue Ones just for this. And of course, it only gives me more reason to be excited for The Last Jedi.

Man, this makes me all the more excited for The Last Jedi. It seems like Rian Johnson hit it out of the park, at least according to Lucasfilm and Disney. They aren't just thrilled because the production was so seamless compared to the apparent nightmares on Rogue One and Solo (and even Force Awakens, to an extent). With this move, they must legitimately feel like The Last Jedi is going to blow people's minds so much that the public will instantly be on-board with whatever Rian Johnson cooks up next. This is tremendous confidence right here, and I'm thrilled.

This is tremendous confidence right here, and I'm thrilled. What makes me even happier for him is the fact that he is so genuinely passionate and enthusiastic about it. When you get independent filmmakers saying how “honored” they are to be working on certain blockbusters, there’s this nagging feeling that they’re really doing it so they can fund other projects. Not Johnson, because anytime that you see him, he is having the time of his life, and it’s refreshing that he legitimately feels like he *wants* to be there. That’s just infectious. And like I said, the fact that they’re willing to give him all the time and resources he needs to lay the foundation not only is a win for artistic expression, but makes me think we’re in for some really ballsy moves. Not that I think we’ll see Star Wars enter R-rated territory anytime soon, if ever, but this feels like a great first step into new and exciting risks and experiments.

Disney must have a LOT of faith in The Last Jedi. But seriously, I’m happy for him. He’s come a long way from Brick and he seems really passionate. And honestly, the Star Wars universe is so huge that it’ll be nice to see some films that have nothing to do with the Skywalkers.

That's a good thing. A bad thing is that Disney is still in charge, and I don't hold out much hope for them letting Johnson make a true artistic effort. But at least they're giving him the leash to come up with his own ideas.

In a few years, we'll have superhero and Star Wars fatigue. I've had fatigue of both for years now. Occasionally, one that I like comes out ( Guardians of the Galaxy, Rogue One), but they're not enough to stop the overall feeling of "why?"

Agreed on the superhero, but Star Wars is just getting started with their expanded universe. It will get much, much worse.

Agreed on the superhero, but Star Wars is just getting started with their expanded universe. It will get much, much worse. Well, I despised The Force Awakens precisely because it felt like an exceptionally shitty Marvel product. So I just throw it in the same boat until Disney proves that they're willing to make artistic films instead of mass-produced crap.

But at least they're giving him the leash to come up with his own ideas. Eh. I'm sure Kennedy will at let him have some control. They wouldn't be handing him the keys to this new trilogy if they didn't have some confidence in him.
