1. Opening Night 2. Husbands 3. The Killing of a Chinese Bookie 4. Shadows 5. A Woman Under the Influence 6. Minnie and Moskowitz 7. Love Streams 8. Gloria 9. Too Late Blues 10. Faces 11. A Child Is Waiting I haven't seen Too Late Blues but 1. Opening Night 2. A Woman Under the Influence 3. The Killing of A Chinese Bookie 4. Love Streams 5. Gloria 6. Faces 7. Minnie and Moskowitz 8. Shadows 9. Husbands 10. A Child is Waiting This might be weird, but I could see the top 2 again and again. They might be emotionally draining for most people but I LOVE Opening Night and A Woman Under the Influence. The Killing of a Chinese Bookie I saw this year for the first time and was so impressed. Love Streams was the most difficult for me to watch, but it has a lot of power. Gloria is just a fun ride but Gena Rowlands' awesomeness makes it watchable. I didn't like Husbands, I'm sorry. I liked that scene where Peter Falk is trying to pick up that strange, older woman, but that's about it.

A Woman Under the Influence - Excellent. Husbands - Contains both the good and the bad of him for me. the first half was hard to get through (with all those ridiculous, aimless chats) but somewhere in the middle - as soon as the gang get to London - It starts to shine. Shadows - Cool debut. Faces - Good, but I don't have the nerve to revisit it.

Husbands to me is his best and it contains his most piercing, lacerating insights.
More than that though it's about something almost no other American film is even about, the fragile, inevitable crumbling of the male ego and its facade. It's also riotously funny and perceptively acted. I couldn't name many US films from it's era that deserve to be mentioned with it really.
All the other films have elements of what he did there but not as consistently or as believably as in Husbands but all are better than good and all are worth seeing more than once too - I don't consider Too Late Blues or A Child Is Waiting or Big Trouble with his films below they are a different thing and subject to studio pressures etc.
