I like Emma Stone (she was great in Birdman) but she has so little to do in La La Land, I find it hard to imagine how anyone could be wowed by her performance.
Whereas Natalie's performance is Jackie, pretty much. Not even close, for me.

Emma Stone. I didn't love Portman in Jackie quite frankly.

Both are very good, but I related more to Stone, and found her performance to a lot more "natural" as a result.

Portman had the best performance but Emma is likely going to win.

Portman. That was super easy! Best Actress could be interesting this year.

Natalie Portman, all the way. The only nominated Best Actress performance that comes close is Isabelle Huppert.

Both make fine nominees, but I slightly prefer Stone who is given way less to work with but feels slightly more real and genuine throughout.

See, the thing with Portman's performance is that few of her big scenes go on long enough to have that much impact. I loved the film and she'd be a fine winner, but she didn't wow me as much as the trailer and the raves led me to believe. It's certainly a strong image to see Jackie wipe her husband's blood off her face, for example, but it's chopped so short that it can hardly register before Larraín moves on to the next scene. It's strong work, but not "OMG give this woman all the awards right now" territory. I'd rank her 3rd behind Huppert and Stone.

Portman, for the sheer fact she nailed the harder part.
