Which of these American actors born in 1980 do you prefer? While I think that Gyllenhaal's best ( Brokeback Mountain) is better than any performance of Pine's, I have to say that I am much more excited for the path that Pine's career is taking. He seems to be working from all angles: British period piece, eccentric comic work, TV, edgy indie, Superhero/Sci-Fi - he is growing/challenging himself as an actor, and he has shown that he has range. I've said it before, but I did not realize that he had the complete 180 from broad physical/musical comedy ( Into the Woods) to pained interiority ( Hell or High Water) in him. Gyllenhaal's performances are powerful, but for me, the intensity in his work is primarily surface level. His acting doesn't feel particularly lived-in - maybe this is just my own personal assessment... What do you think? As for looks... Pine is aging like the finest of wines. He has sort of come into his own now that he's in his mid-30s. Gyllenhaal was very handsome before his drastic weight loss for Nightcrawler, but I'm worried that his face will never recover its healthy glow - his features are quite gaunt now, don't you think? I generally prefer Gyllenhaal. Nightcrawler alone puts him in the upper weight-class of his generation, and I think he's become an incredibly ambitious actor of late who is carving quite the niche for himself on stage. I would have no qualms considering him one of the best of his age group.
Pine can be very good, although I'd argue you neglected to mention that he does his best work with Joe Carnahan. Smokin' Aces and Stretch are balls-to-the-wall (or windshield, if you prefer), frenetic performances that show Pine's unhinged capacity, and I find those inherently more interesting than the typical "leading man" parts he's been getting. But I think he's got a likability and a charm to him that make him very watchable.

I'm more of a fan of Pine tbh. I think we are just now beginning to see his wide range as an actor. He can do comedy & drama so well.

The Pitt comparison is apt, in that both men are adequate enough in leading roles but are actually good-looking character actors. I do think Pine is better than Pitt in general, though. |

I went with Pine because I loved that wordplay there, but I think that they're both even right now at least in terms of talent. Gyllenhaal has the better filmography and better parts, but I think that jakesully is correct in that we're just beginning to see Pine's incredible range as an actor. It's very difficult to compare them right now because Gyllenhaal had more than a 10 year head start in the industry, and Gyllenhaal found a prestige Best Picture nominee ( Brokeback Mountain to star in almost 10 years before Pine finally found a prestige Best Picture nominee to star in ( Hell or High Water. Pine seems like he's catching up though at least in that the playing field is a little more level now that Pine has shown more of his range and getting raves for his work. He's still not there yet, and even in the downpeaks of his career, it's not like Gyllenhaal didn't stop being a great actor. Eventually I think that they'll reach that stage of their career like a Sean Penn or Phillip Seymour Hoffman where they'll finally win an Oscar, probably for the wrong role unfortunately, and then they'll be showered with tons of nominations to make up for being ignored before. Maybe things will change as more diversity is added to Oscar membership, so that it won't take so long for younger actors to get recognized. Of course, there's also the problem of there not being a lot of great roles out there in that age range either, but even when there is, it seems like most of the time AMPAS goes with the older choice. |

I prefer Gyllenhaal -- though I think Pine is a lot of fun in more comedic roles. He's starting to grow on me (I liked him a lot in Stretch, Hell or High Water and most recently Wonder Woman where he had great chemistry with Gadot). He comes off super punchable to me, though.  |

Also, I found Gyllenhaal to be legit AWFUL in Okja, & Southpaw (haven't seen Demolition or Stronger yet) but he is becoming more and more hit or miss for me. Pine on the other hand is getting stronger . Stretch, then Z for Zachariah , then Hell or High Water & Wonder Woman...damn . Dude is doing work .

Gyllenhaal is more talented, but like the OP said, Pine's career feels like it's just about to really take off and he's going to become legit A-list.
