Lots of great ones.
Richard Widmark in Kiss of Death and Eva Marie Saint in On the Waterfront are the tops for me.

I'll be boring and say Welles but no one ever talks about the performance and it's amazing - the age range he covers and his emotional range too - he was only maybe 25 when he shot that or something......it's perfect but gets lost in the film overall too much.

Edward Norton, primal fear. Emily Watson, breaking the waves.

I mean, there's Haing S. Ngor and then there's everyone else, but Barkhad Abdi and Harold Russell deserve plaudits as well.

Gabourey Sidibe in Precious was the first to come to mind.

The best ones have been covered. Obviously Welles, and then Saint in On the Waterfront and Ed Norton in Primal Fear.
