This is the first thing that excited me about Lion King remake. I'm glad he's back. If anything, it’s only made me more worried about the film. In fact, after Debney thoroughly nailed The Jungle Book, I was looking so forward to someone like him breathing new life into the film. Or even one of Hans’ protégés (just not Junkie). Don’t get me wrong, the original Lion King score is one of my all time favorites, and I give Hans a lot of credit for how well the movie turned out, but he is a vastly different composer now than he was 25 years ago. Even laying aside his ill-advised “experimentation” like his collaborators and additional musicians, Pharrell internal dialogue, and Kendrick Lamar ghetto rap because “that’s what Peter would listen to on his iPod”, he’s gotten way too comfortable with his current “epic” phase. Slow-burning and minimalist three-note themes, background ticking and overproduced synth, and of course his reliance on “BRRRRM’s” may have worked for Blade Runner, but has resulted in some very unpleasant stuff this last decade, and it’s not something that’ll work for The Lion King. Even if we’re to assume that this is just gonna be a direct remake that changes nothing, I just don’t trust Hans enough anymore to do a straight remake of his older material. He could prove me wrong and do for this what Menken did for Beauty and the Beast (Whose newer production blew the previous score out of the water), but my gut instinct is not hopeful. Yay! It's gonna be the same exact fucking film except CGI! MONEY!! That’s not true. They’ve changed some characters’ names. Totally different!
