I've long believed neither Childs nor MacReady are a Thing. It feels like so many people trying to give an added twist where it isn't necessary, just for the sake of a twist. The "gasoline drinking" theory doesn't pass muster with me, either.

I see absolutely no reason to think MacReady is a Thing, but Childs is a different story. Despite the freezing cold, Childs does not have foggy breath and you don't see any light in his eyes which Cundey has stated was a decision throughout the film to indicate whether someone was human. Whether or not Carpenter wanted to leave the ending open (as I'm sure he did), I think in the context of the film he inadvertently answered the question.

Childs is. The way the music plays right when he takes a sip from the whiskey, which is actually gasoline (The Thing wouldn’t know the difference), which then leads to MacReady smirking leads me to believe that he is. Plus there’s the whole foggy breath, eye glimmer, change of clothes theroies too.
