Or was it 2004? AH, who cares.
Anyway, I haven't seen this movie since probably before 2010 or so. But I remember loving the original. Gory but an enjoyable premise. I enjoyed the 2nd one as well for the sheer gore factor lol.

The film strikes a weird kind of tone for me. The whole logic of the narrative is so ridiculous that it borders on laughable (especially towards the end), but the film is so straight-faced that depending on my mood I either find it even funnier or just dumb. I know if it eschewed the Se7en-esque tone for a campier, more self-aware tone then it probably would not have been the massive success it was but I would have enjoyed it more. As it is, I just don't really feel like hanging around the poor acting of Cary Elwes and Leigh Whannell for a bit of hackin' written as though it's more than just a silly excuse to watch some Home Alone death traps. I'll give James Wan credit for doing what he can with the material and the cutting of the flashbacks are nicely done, but that's enough for me to really care to watch it again.

Probably the best of the franchise. It's reasonably engaging and occasionally rather intense (this is all going off of when I watched it at like 13 a few years ago). The acting from the main two is pretty bad, but I did like the flashback structure and the ending is very nice.
Impromptu franchise rank/rate: Saw - 6/10 Saw II - 6/10 Saw VI - 5/10 Saw III - 4.5/10 Saw IV - 3.5/10 Saw V - 2/10 Saw 3D (ugh) - 2/10
Yeah, not a great franchise.

It set a new tone for horror in the way it was done the premise and how it was put across - so in your face it made the audience feel complicit in what was happening and "what would you do" (and quite different from Insidious and The Conjuring which were mere ghost stories simply by comparison). It's not a great film at all and it grows wearisome itself much less in the sequels but Saw #1 is a dividing line film in the audience - may be the most crucial in a way of the 2000s.

I dug it overall. Wan is a talented dude. But the acting could have been better ( I know it was a super low budget film so they obviously couldn't afford to get better actors) . The ending took me by surprise so props to Wan for that.

Cary Elwes and Leigh Whannell are both pretty terrible ("Is that you, you BASTARD?"), but the film manages to work in spite of that. It definitely gets a bit sillier than intended, but there are some genuinely creative ideas in the film, suspenseful set pieces, the crew makes good use of their low-budget, and the twist is solid (if you don't think about it too hard). Plus, in hindsight, it's nice to see that the film wasn't reliant on gratuitous torture scenes like the sequels. Unfortunately, the series just went downhill from here.

As far as popcorn-horror films are concerned, I was okay with it until the end. Then I was like "NO! NONONONONONONO! That can't happen! NO!"

This film was exciting, thrilling and disgusting at times, I found myself on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next.

If you take some of the bad acting, and the terrible acting on the part of Cary Elwes out of the equation, it is a fantastic movie. The story is great, the pacing is great and the ending is just fantastic.
