Well...the reviews weren’t lying. What a fucking repugnant movie. I didn’t think I’d see a movie worse than The House this year, but amazingly, this is my new worst pick of the year. It works on no level whatsoever. Not as a dark comedy, social satire, racial commentary, or as a domestic thriller. The subplot of the black family moving in bears ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING WEIGHT to the plot except to use them as scapegoats for the mayhem that occurs. Same goes for Oscar Isaac’s role. Such a pointless waste. And most of all, it’s just dull as shit. It drags and meanders until things come to a head in the third act. It feels like a movie made for the Trump fan base despite being made by people who are clearly against him. Avoid at all costs. It’s not even worth the morbid curiosity with something like even The Emoji Movie.

Masterful blend of genres; surprises aplenty; jet-black comedy. 'Tis good.

I still cannot believe it is that bad. Such a good cast, such good writers, a reasonable fine director…. dammit! But i will see it for myself.

I didn't have as quite a negative reaction to it, but it was indeed flawed. It felt like a movie that needed a stronger first act -- there wasn't enough set-up of plot, character and setting to make me care about how it unfolded. Tonal and narrative issues abounded, and the score was heavy-handed. It's the kind of film where there are some strong, memorable scenes, but the whole is not the sum of its parts.

Is Suburbicon going to be this year's Cosmopolis? The movie that's trashed by everyone except a few hardcore supporters that hold it up as ingenious?

Agreed, it's truly awful. If not for mother! it'd be the worst of the year for me.
Clooney is very very clumsy as a director here. There's a lot of stuff going on, and none of it blends well together and pretty much all of it falls flat. It's not funny, it's not thrilling, it's not gripping in the slightest. The black family moving into the neighborhood subplot takes up a lot of time and provides nothing besides unpleasantness. And Damon's character is boring as shit.
Massive misfire.

Little Nicky will need some serious therapy… Well the film was not as bad as its reputation. Sure its flawed but the screenplay but the Coen Brothers surely worked and was right up their alley. The biggest problem was indeed the direction. I think George Clooney did not really get the tone right for this and if the Coens had directed it themselves it would have worked better. Also I think it was a bit all over the place. For example I think the film had worked better without the subplot of the african american neighbors. Sure it does make sense in the total essence and sparks some irony as well but exactly that part was not well executed by Clooney at all. Matt Damon was miscast. Actually I think if Clooney had decided to play the lead role himself it would have worked better as he is quite well with such dark humor material unlike Damon who felt a bit out of place. Julianne Moore wasnt really great either, although she is the godmother of 50 suburbian housewives.. anyway there was something off about her. Oscar Isaac was great but unfortunately his appearance was very small. Noah Jupe was great and saved the film with his authentic and realistic turn. The look was right and the score worked. The concept was great and it did have some wonderfully dark scenes that were excellently written and thus it was not a complete waste of time or money, however it had potential to be so much better.
