I compare these two incredibly disparate auteurs because they are the only two in cinema history whose films have won the top prizes from the trinity of European film festivals. AltmanPalme d'Or: MASH (1970) Leone d'Oro: Short Cuts (1993) Goldener Bär: Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson (1976) Antonioni Palme d'Or: Blowup (1967) Leone d'Oro: Red Desert (1964) Goldener Bär: La Notte (1961) So, who do you prefer? Make your choice based on their prize-winning films or their entire filmographies - whichever you'd prefer.

I don't know, I guess Altman because I almost always default to the American but I will say they are crucially important guys in film history in weird connected ways - Antonioni in his expression of existentialism where what isn't said is maybe more crucial than what is and Altman in things like over-lapping dialog (i.e. the beginning of McCabe, etc)
I love that before Altman people would stop and speak and then they would be answered the same way, well maybe he didn't "invent" it but damn he mastered it and created a whole distinct feel from it.
I love that stuff.......

I'll go with Altman since 3 Women is miles better than anything else either one of them has made.
