Far and away the best of the choices offered that year in Best Actor (although De Niro and Harris weren't bad by any stretch). He isn't really a dead ringer (heh) for Claus von Bulow, but I find it nevertheless a bold and refreshing portrayal that still captured the essence of the historical (and still living!) figure. With that said, he barely scrapes into my lineup; 1990 was a powerful year.

One of the most underrated best actor wins ever. He should have won another Oscar for Dead Ringers. Best performance of the 80s.

Great year for Jeremy Irons. He could've been nominated for Dead Ringers that year and he would still win. A deserved win in a fantastic year

Great year for Jeremy Irons. He could've been nominated for Dead Ringers that year and he would still win. A deserved win in a fantastic year I'm confused. Dead Ringers came out two years beforehand. Yeah you right I always mix things up for some reason. I guess I like to imagine he was nominated for his performance in Dead Ringers, which I think is his best work to date. -- Guess I'm still surprised he wasn't nominated for that movie, he even thanks Cronenberg in his Oscar acceptance speech .

Because even Irons knew (quite rightly) that he was winning partly as a makeup for Dead Ringers.

He's my win that year too by a considerable margin. Only one who comes close is Michael Rooker for Portrait of a Serial Killer, but no way in hell that was ever coming close to the Oscars.

It was an offbeat win, and I support it.

Not my winner although he keeps you guessing and provides a sense of mystery with his portrayal. I always thought how did Ron Silver not get nominated??? He perfectly captures Alan Dershowitz in philosophy and personality.
