Certainly the most consistent of the 80s wave of great American actresses, and I think her versatility is fairly underrated, too - she's often thought of as a rather cold and clinical actress, but I think this is only because of the nature of her two signature roles ('Fatal Attraction' and 'Dangerous Liaisons'). She is equally adept at conveying warmth and tenderness, don't you think? When you visit George Washington's estate, Mt. Vernon, in Virginia, she provides the voiceover narration of Martha Washington - this is your Oscar-winning role, Glenn! Early word on her work in the to-be-released-in-2018 'The Wife' is that her performance is major. We'll see.

I like her a fair bit, and she has knocked it out of the park on occasion, but she isn't one of my favourites.

I've really never been all that captivated by her film performances, but Damages and her stint on The Shield are enough to put her in the conversation of "best of her generation." There hasn't really been a year where I felt she was robbed, unless you count her getting snubbed for Best Song in 2011 (in a year where they only went with two nominees, they couldn't find room to nominate her song from Albert Nobbs and give her a pity win?).

I mentioned it to Tyler in a PM that she is sort of emblematic of the "80s generation" to me - Hanks, Close, Hurt, Weaver to name some - where maybe I held initially held it against them that they didn't seem as exciting or kinetic as their 70s counterparts but over time you appreciate the skill they had (even if you don't like it all)
I'm not a huge fan of Close but you have to acknowledge her skill across all mediums - film, TV, stage (musicals and non) and recognize her talent - a lot of that 80s class when viewed in their totality are impressive and she certainly is. I love Jessica Lange more than her by a lot say and Lange has clearly thrived across all media but if I'm being honest she can't touch Close's theater resume (and the impressiveness of that deserves acknowledgment)
