We have seen culture clash comedies over and over again but this was different. This was not filled with the typical cliches or the typical attempts to make you laugh, no this one had a lot of depth. I think a huge role played that it is actually based on a true story. The love story between Kumail Nanijani who plays himself and his wife Emily, here played by the wonderful Zoe Kazan. It is a story with a lot of ups and downs and those were perfectly linked together by the amazing screenplay and good job of director Michael Showalter. Nanijani himself gives a very good performance but its the supporting cast that truly shines. Up in front Holly Hunter who just put out her acting weapons once again for this great character. She was extremely natural and from the first to the last second of her screentime absolute in control of her role and far from predictable. Also great kudos to Ray Romano who really stole a lot of scenes he was in and perfectly combined drama with comedy in his performance. Such a down to earth turn. Zoe Kazan was just precious. She had a lot of serious moments and she managed them just as perfect as her comedic ones. And she was so appealing and lovable from the beginning to the end. I also loved the way Nunijani, who together with his wife Emily wrote the screenplay, portrays his family . Far away from the cliche of how muslims are usually portrait. He gave them a lot of humor, self irony and sarcasm which was refreshingly fun. Those scenes were among the funniest. I really liked it and think the buzz of it is deserved. The ending is so heartwarming. It really is something. The magic of it is that it is not predictable - even if you know the outcome of the real life writers being married and writing their romance.
