I think that the hardest thing in judging a foreign language performance is... the language. I can easily tell if the line delivery is convincing if I can speak the language, or at least I have an idea of it even if I need the help of subtitles. Otherwise, my opinion on the actress has an obvious limit.

Yes, it can be distracting to have to use subtitles (and God forbid you watch one of these performances dubbed; that completely screws with the vocal inflection and dialectic choices), but anyone can watch Krystyna Janda's performance in Interrogation and know exactly what she is feeling without needing subtitles.

stephenI saw too many people on this board or movie awards appreciating Nicoletta Braschi for her performance in La vita è bella. Her line delivery is just horrible. Ask any Italian. Apparently her facial expressions are enough for most foreigners.

Adjani in The Story Of Adele H. is among the greatest leading female performances ever, so that's definitely #1. Ullmann in Face to Face and Bergman in Autumn Sonata would probably round out my top 3 because those two performances are all-timers as well.
