Two similar movies in many ways I think, and both pretty much equal in terms of greatness in my opinion. I just re-watched Monster and was reminded of how great not just Theron is (she's gotta be in my all-time top 10 for sure), but almost everything else about the movie. However, I'd probably give the slight edge to Boys Don't Cry, which is probably the more powerful and raw work - though again, they're essentially even for me. I'd give both around a 9.

Boys Don't Cry by faaaar. BDC is an extremely singular film with a precise aesthetic inspired by Scorsese and Cassavetes. Monster is just an average biopic. Could easily have been a TV production, with nothing much to recommend it beyond the performances.

Boys Don't Cry though I prefer Theron of the two performances.
