Looks like Ridley Scott didn't screw up this time. Impressed. Alien: Covenant was a mess. Scott is inconsistent as all fuck as I'm concerned. I was worried this wouldn't be so good, what's wrong with that?

Looks great and I wouldn't count Williams out to replace Robbie even in a stacked category - 4 time nominee who could be a 6 time nominee already - a legit great actress - she's this generation's Burstyn (sometimes she is its Streep actually), in a weighty, straight drama has more pull than people might think imo.

pacinoyes - I wouldn't count Williams out either, but I doubt it'd be Robbie she'd replace. Curious - what do you think is her greatest performance? I still think it's Blue Valentine, with Wendy and Lucy just behind it.

I'd agree those are her two best - some of her other nodded work has a stunt feel to it, but it's a terrific stunt feel and some of her best work has an entirely different feel too (Take This Waltz for one, all her Reichardt stuff). I'd nod her for Shutter Island too and no one does and I don't know why maybe because they were too busy hating her character or the movie but her "my school is" delivery is one of my faves specifically - that's deranged genius of a line delivery to me . Her big emotional scene in Manchester By The Sea is a classic to me also (for Affleck too), she's the real deal. Who do you think is at risk in actress among the top 5? Outside Ronan and McDormand - I see Streep as having the right movie I guess, Hawkins having enough heat (although a quirky genre pic is a bit iffy) so that leaves Robbie at risk more than anyone to me - I'm mean it's a satire and they play odd sometimes ........

I think it's one of her best performances and an egregious snub. Hate when supporting categories are filled with category frauds (Davis, Vikander, Mara) instead of true supporting turns. She had a very limited screentime but was extremely memorable and strong.

pacinoyes - My guess would be Streep. Honestly, I'm not so sure that she and Dench aren't competing for the fifth spot. 34 days until the Oscar nominations!

I don't see Williams cracking the lineup, dense as it is, but if she did, surely it wouldn't be at Streep's expense. They'd screw someone like Hawkins over before her.

Plummer might sneak in because the story is in everyone's minds but I'm hoping for Woody for the 5th spot.

Damn, Ridley. Didn't know you still had it in you. Will you watch Danny Boyle's FX series, Trust, as well?
