The Graduate towers above anything else he or most any other director ever made. I love that damn movie so much which is why I bring it up unprompted so much in examples and so forth.
As much as I like Virginia Woolf it may be a touch overrated. Great acting, but Nichols hadn't entirely found his voice as a film director yet. It's sort of "all over the place".

I agree with the usual suspects for best but really want to advocate for Carnal Knowledge which is a lot tougher a film than some that appear to be that thing (Closer which is a good film and Charlie Wilson's War which is flat to me). Carnal Knowledge very wryly and very wisely documents the male sexual dissent, or at least the male sexual lies before the descent. It's actually a very honest depiction of it, and if you made it today the film would be decried as being "sexist" which misses the point of it.
What's worse though is that some may see it as a cultural relic when actually it's actually a timeless film in that regard and you don't really realize that until the 2nd or 3rd time you've seen it.

Best Silkwood
Worst Out of the ones I have seen, I guess Biloxi Blues is the least and that it still a very good, very fresh film.
Underated Heartburn Postcards from the Edge Regarding Henry
Overrated (slightly) The Graduate (a very good film, but not an all-time great for me. I love Anne Bancroft in it though)

Seen: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The Graduate Catch-22 Regarding Henry The Birdcage Closer
Best: The Graduate Worst: Regarding Henry Most Underrated: The Birdcage Most Overrated: The Graduate (I guess, just because some people revere it so much and I tend to finish the film thinking "That's it?")

best: Carnal Knowledge The Graduate Working Girl The Birdcage
worst: Closer (a steaming pile of shit that thinks it's gold) Charlie Wilson's War (everything about this film, even PSH, was forgettable)
most underrated: Carnal Knowledge, The Birdcage
Silkwood is fine but nothing special apart from Streep's performance. Postcards from the Edge, Virginia Woolfe, and Catch-22 are in my watchlist.

Way too theatrical for my taste, although Burton and Taylor are good.

His best work is Angels in America, hands down. In terms of feature films, I suppose Silkwood is the best.
His worst film, by far, is Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which also stands as the most overrated movie of his canon.
His most underrated flick is The Day of the Dolphin.

You people calling Virginia Woolf overrated are fucking nuts. I really think it might be the best American film of the '60s, a subtle time capsule of that late sixties era but totally timeless. I could rave all day. To this day it's his best work and he has quite the resume. Not many people can call their debuts their finest works.
