My choice would be Peter O'Toole, but his nationality seems to be a point of confusion, even for him (apparently he had two birth certificates) - some sources cite him as Irish while others claim British. So, I'll go with... And who might your choice be?

DDL is right behind him. I always give Fiennes the edge because he play any role naturally.

Grossly underrated ! He sure is. Just last year he blew me away once again with his work in "Chronic" and "10 Rillington Place" (and I'm a fan of Attenborough's performance in the original film).

Finney but I love a lot of British actors and I love how it goes in waves...........the Olivier wave, the Burton wave, the early 60s wave, the DDL/Oldman wave, etc.

Living: Albert Finney. All time: Charles Laughton.
I want to make special mention of three all-time greats who tend to be overlooked and whose best film work is largely unseen: James Mason, Trevor Howard and Michael Redgrave.

The Deadly Affair, yes (I love all of Lumet's collaborations with Mason), but not The Last of Sheila. I tend to avoid watching Herbert Ross films unless I really have to... This one worth making an exception for?

I think Alan Bates and Tom Courtenay are in need of shout-outs, as well - both hugely talented.
