I like De Sica even as an actor (Il generale Della Rovere is probably his performance I like the most). I guess that watching his Oscars is a good beginning.

I don't think I could choose between Antonioni, De Sica and Visconti and my favorite Italian films are actually by the Taviani Brothers but I don't know if just those top 3 is enough to put them at the top spot either. Anyway, Night of the Shooting Stars, Padre Padrone and Fiorile are the 3 films of theirs I love.......in some ways I like Fiorile the best too even though its the least acclaimed.

De Sica, who was also a wonderful actor, as cherry68 mentioned. In addition to the usual suspects (The Bicycle Thieves, Umberto D., Two Women), I think The Children Are Watching Us is also worth-watching and unjustly forgotten nowadays.

Sergio Leone.
Why? He made the greatest film ever, one more that is in my Top Five and two more that are in my Top 100. Then there are two more movies I consider great and so only one film in his small filmography is left, that I would consider a bit weaker.
