She lobbied hard for this role - she wanted it desperately. To this day, she still counts it as the "role that got away." Originally, Fred Zinnemann was attached to direct, and Rampling was his only choice for Sarah. It wasn't meant to be, though - Rumor has it that the author of the novel, John Fowles, was disgusted with 'The Night Porter' and Rampling's work in it, and would not hear of her being cast in the film adaptation. When Karel Reisz replaced Zinnemann at the helm, Meryl Streep replaced Rampling as the star. Hearing of this "almost was" casting was really hard to shake for me - while I love Streep, I really don't think she was the right choice for this role, and it's my least favorite of her Oscar-nominated performances by quite a distance. She herself has admitted to being very unhappy with her performance here. Can you imagine Rampling's emerald green eyes turning to you from the cliff - her signature stare piercing your heart? She was born for this part, don't you think?

I don't think that Rampling could have saved the movie, but she would have been perfect casting. But then, I hate Streep in pretty much everything she does, and this was no exception.
Shame to hear about the author hating The Night Porter, which I feel has one of the greatest screen performances of all time from her -- also a shame to hear that Zinnemann was dropped, because he would have been a better fit for the material than Reisz. Both Rampling and Zinnemann would have brought a more timeless quality, instead of the "children playing dress-up" that I got from the finished product.

Martin Stett'The Night Porter' has to be one of the most controversial and divisive films of all time. Rampling has admitted to enjoying the courting of controversy, though. As for the "dress up" feel of the film - one might argue that that was the point of this adaptation, but I take your meaning.

Oh honey, I can't really imagine her on a clifftop looking out to sea, full of anticipation and daydreams about all those Best Actress wins. Nobody could have done it as well as Meryl. The year before, Rampling did that Woody Allen movie and she wasn't all that... There's no Sophie's Choice about it. It's Meryl.

Thoughts of La Rampling in Swimming Pool? I thought she was superb in that. A modern classic.

MsMovieStar Yes, I love her work in 'Swimming Pool' - inspired and searing as per usual with Rampling. I think she's even better in Ozon's earlier film, 'Under the Sand,' though.

MsMovieStar wendy Martin StettWhat would you guys have thought of Glenn Close in 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'? Close's eroticism is so hypnotic - it's so unconventional and yet totally convincing all at once. I'd love to see her here, wouldn't you?

Oh honey, I've never found Glenn Close attractive let alone erotic. While I think she's an excellent actress and certainly up there with Meryl Streep and Judy Davis, I think she's be miscast. The only film I've seen that she looked remotely attractive was in Meeting Venus (You'd like it). I normally find her quite hard looking. She was brilliant as the witchy Cruella de Vil.
