The first time I saw him was in a tv show, A Family for Joe, that didn't last too long, I think on NBC. I could probably Google what it was about, but I don't know if it's worth that much effort. I think it was something about three kids were orphaned, and Robert Mitchum's character was homeless so they hired him to be their grandfather. I remember that Juliette Lewis was on it too because she talked about it later on in her career. The show sucked, but definitely not because of Mitchum.
Then, I saw him later in Scrooged and the remake of Cape Fear. He was great in Scrooged, and even though I love cats, I love how he's so concerned about cats being tv viewers, and then he kicks his cat at the end when Frank goes crazy on live tv. He was probably one of the few good parts of the remake of Cape Fear too, even though he wasn't in it that long.
Then, I saw his older work; although, I still need to watch a lot more of his work. Of course, his performances in The Night of the Hunter and the original Cape Fear are all time greats. Also usually the western isn't my favorite genre, but I still remember him and Dean Martin in Five Card Stud.

One of the all-time greats. One of the biggest film tragedies is that he fell off that damn horse in preproduction and couldn't play Old Man Clanton in Tombstone. He still narrated it, but I wish we'd have seen Mitchum boss Powers Boothe, Stephen Lang and Michael Biehn around.
Also, watch his Cape Fear and see how much he makes De Niro's take look downright amateurish by comparison.

Great actor without a question, though I wouldn't include him at the very top. He has a few great performances, especially in "The Night of the Hunter", "Farewell my Lovely" (still picture him in my head, when I re-read the Marlowe novels) and also "Cape Fear", but often he is "just" good.
