This trailer dropped yesterday. It now has an MPAA rating and is slated for a September release! Hype can recommence

First I've heard of it. Looks pretty and all, but... eh. It looks like the sort of thing Weinstein was producing in the early 2000's. Dry and safe and perfectly acceptable, but... eh.

I typically find these rotoscope movies very gimmicky (ie. A Scanner Darkly and Tower), but I do think it looks beautiful, even if the human faces veer too far into the uncanny valley for my liking.
And of course, my lovely lass.

Safe is maybe the last thing I'd describe this as Take away the animation. Close your eyes and listen to the trailer. It's a boring sounding biopic inside of the device of a guy investigating Van Gogh's death. Personally speaking, the line ""You want to know so much about his death, but what do you know of his life" makes me cringe. Maybe it works in context, but in the trailer it sounds silly. And it looks like they're taking the whole angle "the madness was a side effect of his genius!" approach, and that pisses me off. Mental disorders are not some byproduct of being a genius, and I hate that the romanticization of this concept persists. |
