I was already sad to hear that Vangelis wasn't coming back for the new Blade Runner, but was confident that Johann Johannson would bring something fresh and possibly as brilliant to the table. Disappointed to know Hans Zimmer's newly bombastic sound will be taking the reins instead...
So, as means of trying to redeem this, what do your line-ups look like for this year so far? It's been a pretty lackluster year, with the only true stand-out (for me, anyway) being Giacchino's most inspired work since Up.
Best Original Score: 01. Michael Giacchino - War for the Planet of the Apes. 02. Benjamin Wallfisch - A Cure for Wellness. 03. Brian McOmber - It Comes at Night. 04. Michael Abels - Get Out. 05. Michael Andrews - The Big Sick.
I wish I could include Benjamin Wallfisch's incredible couple of tracks for the Dunkirk score, but Zimmer's obnoxious pieces keep it from making the list (I do want to say, I am a fan of Zimmer, but only about two of his last ten or so scores have been worthy of the rest of his repertoire. I'm just disappointed in how he's become all about how loud he can get rather than working on something worthwhile).

Johansson isn't leaving Blade Runner; Zimmer and Wallfisch are simply adding some supplementary sounds. From what Villeneuve is saying, it sounds like the bulk of the score is still Johann's.

Keeping in mind I've only seen like twenty movies, and my tastes tend to skew more towards the grand, orchestral variety.
Dunkirk - Hans Zimmer The Great Wall - Ramin Djawadi Spider-Man: Homecoming - Michael Giacchino ***War for the Planet of the Apes - Michael Giacchino*** Wonder Woman - Rupert Gregson-Williams
And I didn't include Beauty and the Beast since much of it was already pre-existing. Otherwise, it would take this (and maybe the rest of the year) in a walk.
Let's be honest, though. Everything this year is just a warm-up for the eventual Williams one-two punch.

My bad. I didn't really read the article, I just saw the headlines. Well, I'm glad Wallfisch is on board. I loved his work in A Cure for Wellness, even if some of it was pretty standard "creepy" stuff. He's got some potential, especially with his Dunkirk pieces as well. Glad it'll mostly be Johann's fingerprint, though.

Ahh, yeah, see, our tastes in scores greatly differ every year. I feel like Williams, just like Spielberg, has lost his touch of magic that he once had. I'll still give him a fighting chance, but not going to have high expectations for his work. However, I'm so glad we agree on Giacchino as our win at least. I think his Spider-Man score, aside from a couple of tracks, is woefully generic - especially when compared to the god-like score from Danny Elfman that's one of my favorites of the last decade. But he really, really brought it with Apes this time. He's done solid work on the other two, but this one was something truly special. Felt straight out of the '70s, but with an '80s blockbuster flare to it. The scores I'm looking forward to are Clint Mansell's Mute, Jonny Greenwood's couple of scores, and anything Alexandre Desplat (given its one he gets full creative control with, not just having to copy/paste).

I actually loved his Spidey work (and more MCU movies need that quality of music), but Apes was just on another level for me. Grounded and simple, yet so rousing and beautiful, like a Morricone score in blockbuster form. The Nova theme (and "Apes Together Strong") have been huge obsessions of mine. Aside from the Williams ones, I'm looking forward to Blade Runner, Coco (love me my Pixar), and anything Desplat (even Valerian).

Ghost in the Shell (Clint Mansell, Lorne Balfe) is the only score I've heard that I care enough to mention. Really didn't care for the new Planet of the Apes score, and the movie itself was underwhelming too. The scores for Wonder Woman and Logan are both forgettable and neither of them stood out to me while I was watching.

Just putting my eggs in different, newer baskets now. I think MCU just needs to allow their composers room to be creative rather than making them copy/paste to other tunes from other films (as mentioned in Every Frame a Painting's video essay on MCU's scores). I mean, I can hum Danny Elfman's Spider-Man or John Ottman's X-Men themes in my head all day because they had that freedom to make something unique, but I can't think of a single MCU theme on the top of my head - they just all sound the same to me (though Giacchino's Doctor Strange theme is the closest anyone's gotten, even if the rest of the score is the same mind-numbing stuff for me). Good call on comparing his Apes to Morricone, though. It really did feel like it had that grand, sweeping feel to it. I love those tracks, but my favorite is "Assault of the Earth". I just love those strange flute-like sounds (can't pinpoint what instrument that is). They just scream Bernard Herrmann for me and I love it. Forgot about Coco, hope they can knock it out of the park.
