I'd be ok with 3D being scrapped across the board tbh

I think they had this in mind for a while but glad to see they're finally moving forward with the decision. And it seems the success of 'Dunkirk' pretty much confirmed that films shown in IMAX cinemas, regardless of what it was shot with, should not be compromised by the pointless gimmick that is 3D. IMAX projectors are of the highest quality and provide the most vibrant and clearest of images, so why shortchange the audience of the experience with annoying plastic glasses that simply make everything look drab?

As long as they decide to split with IMAX 3D and 2D showings, I'm absolutely okay with this decision.
And like you've said, they probably planned this for a while given that 'The LEGO Batman Movie' and 'Cars 3' only got IMAX 2D screenings - at least in the U.S.
Right now, only 'Blade Runner 2049' is planning to go for this route, and honestly: 1. I'm not too torn with this one since this didn't exactly scream "must-see in 3D" from get-go. If it happened to an MCU film, a 'Star Wars' film, or a Pixar film, then I would've taken issues. 2. I kind of saw this coming from miles away since all trailers for this film didn't exactly have IMAX 3D advertisement.*
*Do you think director's say could also influence the decision whether a film will be screened in IMAX 3D or not? In this film's case, I wouldn't exactly be surprised...

Good riddance. Post-converted 3D was a mistake.

honestly, the only film I have ever enjoyed in IMAX 3D was Avatar. Enjoyed it so much I saw it twice in that format. Seen a number of other blockbusters in 3D and it wasnt the same. It seems like James Cameron is the only director that "gets" 3D and is able to utilize it to add to the film experience .

I'd be ok with 3D being scrapped across the board tbh This. Unlike you NA folks, we (in Asia) get every Hollywood movie in 3D. We don't even get a wide 2D release and have to watch a movie in 3D forcefully.
