Omg Annette Bening is finally winning her long overdue Oscar! This will be Still Alice 2.0 đŹ
"Deadline: Sony Pictures Classics Will Win Annette Bening-Starrer âFilm Stars Donât Die In Liverpoolâ
One of the plum acquisition titles at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival is about to be taken off the table and will premiere in Canada with an eye toward launching in awards season. After a mad pursuit by prestige distributors, Sony Pictures Classics is in negotiations on a deal for the Annette Bening-starrer Film Stars Donât Die In Liverpool. Iâm told the deal will be done before the fest, and is in the $2 million range for North American rights plus some additional territories. The idea will be to capitalize on Beningâs winning performance in the film, with early buzz among those whoâve seen it that this could be Beningâs year."

JayAgain was a little bit cautious in bringing up the fact that SPC also bought Miles Ahead before that premiered at the NYFF. I had totally forgotten about that film, and how crazy some anti-DiCaprio people were in stanning for it because they didn't want Leo to win. However, someone else pointed out that SPC has been spot on with Best Actress in the last few years, so I'm definitely very optimistic about this right now. As much as I love Winslet and feel that it's inevitable that Streep will win her fourth, probably fifth, I would like a someone who has never won before to win especially someone that can be considered due like Bening. ETA: While trying to come up with a way to touch the Woody Allen controversy and why I didn't want to go through all that again with Winslet, but then just deciding to delete that part because I didn't want to make posters mad here, I totally forgot that I think that Foy should definitely go supporting now. Best Actress is shaping up, at least on paper, to be a very tough category this year, and while I could see her being nominated as the designated first timer which usually happens, if she wants any chance of winning, I'd go supporting. Plus, if this category stays as strong as it seems right now, there might not even be a "newbie" spot.

Winslet has stronger supports from Woody (he's gonna make her Blue Jasmine 2.0) and Leo & the fanboys, the 20th anniversary of Titanic duh... I'm a bit worried about Winslet, but she's already an Oscar winner and we don't have any evidence that she's perceived as due for a second lead oscar in the industry. Her post-Oscar career hasn't been stellar. And for as close as she was said to be for Steve Jobs, she never won when up against Vikander in the role she won the Oscar for. The Blue Jasmine comparisons are fair, though Blanchett's first was supporting and her biggest competitors were former winners.

UPDATED, 12:04 PM: Sony Pictures Classics today confirmed Deadlineâs exclusive from two weeks ago that it has acquired the Annette Bening-toplined Film Stars Donât Die in Liverpool. Read SPCâs release below.
Here is Mondayâs release from Sony Pictures Classics:
Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired all rights in North America, Eastern Europe, Germany and Asia Pay Television to Paul McGuiganâs FILM STARS DONâT DIE IN LIVERPOOL. The film is premiering in Gala Presentations at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
FILM STARS DONâT DIE IN LIVERPOOL stars Academy AwardÂź nominee Annette Bening, BAFTAÂź Award winner Jamie Bell, Academy AwardÂź nominee Julie Walters, and Academy AwardÂź winner Vanessa Redgrave. The film reunites Sony Pictures Classics and Bening after BEING JULIA, for which Bening was nominated for an OscarÂź for Best Actress.
Based on Peter Turnerâs memoir, the film follows the playful but passionate relationship between Turner (Bell) and the eccentric Academy AwardÂź-winning actress Gloria Grahame (Bening) in 1978 Liverpool. What starts as a vibrant affair between a legendary femme fatale and her young lover quickly grows into a deeper relationship, with Turner being the person Gloria turns to for comfort. Their passion and lust for life is tested to the limits by events beyond their control.
Written by Matt Greenhalgh, FILM STARS DONâT DIE IN LIVERPOOL is produced by Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions and Colin Vaines of Synchronistic Pictures, executive produced by Stuart Ford, Zygi Kamasa, Paul McGuigan and Michael G. Wilson.
âWe are thrilled that FILM STARS DONâT DIE IN LIVERPOOL will be released by Sony Pictures Classics. We are happy to be working with Mike and Tom who share our passion for this film,â said Barbara Broccoli.
âAnnette Bening in the role of a lifetime as an elusive personality whose dramatic true story defies belief. Supported to perfection by Jamie Bell, Julie Walters, Vanessa Redgrave and the rest of the cast, embodied by Paul McGuiganâs precise direction. And then thereâs producer Barbara Broccoli whose diligence over many years made it all happen. Independent filmmaking doesnât come better than this. It is a privilege to be involved in bringing this remarkable film to the public,â said Sony Pictures Classics.
WME Global negotiated the deal on behalf of EON Productions with SPC. International territories are represented by IM Global.

Bening will have the due narrative and her role sounds more baity on paper. If she finally ends in empty handed, Oscar must hate her so much Merc saw The Mountain Between Us per Letterboxd and suggested that it's hilariously bad. Could be her Norbit.

Merc saying something is hilariously bad is actually a compliment, though, and even if it's bad (which I'm expecting it to be), the Norbit thing doesn't exist, as proven time and again by Jupiter Ascending, The Seventh Son and several other flops. On top of that, Winslet is not Eddie Murphy. She's beloved enough in th industry that this thing could get Collateral Beauty-level pans and no one would think twice before voting for her if Wonder Wheel is a Blue Jasmine-level powerhouse.

December 15th release date. Could be it seen as a sign of confidence that they're not just doing a qualifying run and January or Feb release date as is the case with most actor only, middling vehicles?
I guess this can also put the Miles Ahead comparisons to bed, as that was never given an awards friendly release date.

Yeah we already knew it was getting a prime release date given SPC's main interest of pushing Bening. I actually expected it to be earlier, like in November, but that date is also fine and is probably less crowded for now.

Well Bening will be a shoe in for the nomination. Depends on the films reputation if she finally gets it. But signs are good for her this year.

B from The Playlist theplaylist.net/film-stars-dont-die-liverpool-review-20170902/So this doesn't seem like the disaster or flop people expected based on the directors resume. With good reviews, SPC and a good release date, I think Bening is in good position for the nom. Her notices aren't the kind of raves she had last year (so far) and this year seems competitive so it's hard to say more but I don't think a win is out of the question either. Though to be fair, Feinberg did write a piece saying that he doesn't think she'll win and is only predicting a nomination at this point. I think reviews so far are about as good as we could've hoped for under the circumstances.
