If I were the producers, I'd propose Cary Fukunaga at the helm and Idris Elba to 007 it up.

I hope they put some effort into this one.

I feel like if it were someone other than Craig, they'd be announced by now. It's a pretty damn high-profile role and if it is indeed only two years away...

If they're gonna sideline Craig and cast someone new then give the director chair to Nolan. That'd be a dream come true for many and will be a welcoming change to this franchise.

Interesting news but I believe Villeneuve will be busy with "Dune". I'd like to see Mackenzie taking over this.

I'm just going to say it, I'd really like to see a Refn-directed Bond.

I would say yes to David Mackenzie, but Nolan would be my first choice (altough unlikely)

Demange is a slightly left field choice but if they are really aiming for a complete shift in tone then I guess it makes sense. Still wouldn't be my first pick though.

Yep, exactly my thoughts. That way Nolan can steer the story in the direction he wants it to go and he can play a big part in who gets cast as Bond.

Rumors about what would have happened if Craig hadn't come back:
I listened to the James Bonding podcast episode that's referenced in the article. I know it's just gossip, but the stuff about Tom Hardy is still pretty juicy. I used to listen to that podcast more often when they put out episodes more frequently... I love those guys. They also seem to really care about where they get their info from, so while I'd still take it with a grain of salt, I'd rather hear this kind of stuff from them or their guests' mouths than read it from some clickbait news source. Craig doing two more films back-to-back definitely seems like bunk though, especially since Craig said on Colbert that he thinks "this is it" and wants to try and go out on a high note.
If the rumor about Nolan wanting to do a trilogy with Hardy was true (and that's a big if), and Nolan ends up taking over in 2022 (Bond's 60th "Diamond" anniversary) after Craig is done, I wonder if Hardy will still be up for consideration because at that point he'll be in his mid 40s.
He'll be 40 next month, which is a little older than when Craig started his run. I feel like if Nolan ends up wanting to do a trilogy with Hardy in 5 years, it will most likely have to be done back-to-back-to-back. Assuming there would be a 2-year gap between each (which has been normal for Nolan until Dunkirk), Hardy will be around Craig's current age by the time the third film is done, which would make sense. I could also see Nolan being interested in telling a story of an older Bond.
I suppose it depends on the deal Nolan would make with the Bond producers, but I'm also not sure how they would feel about him doing other projects in between Bonds, which would create bigger gaps between films. And in that case, they would probably need to cast someone besides Hardy...

Nolan, no! not three films. Don't waste your time dammit.

I can totally see Hardy as Bond and Nolan could work too, although the former would indeed be a little too old by then.

That's a relief. He was terrible in Spectre.

Not surprised. After the Spectre production debacle, the producers are probably looking to "start over" a bit.

Sounds like a good enough of a choice to me. I don't want Sam Mendez again, despite loving Skyfall and enjoying the first 2/3 of Spectre.
Martin McDonaugh would be my top choice, followed by Martin Campbell again.
